The position

Responsible for specialist structural engineering design projects from inception to practical completion in commercial, health, retail, industrial, education, hotels, leisure and other specialist sectors. At AKT II you will work on some of the most interesting and complex buildings around the world with current projects in over 40 countries. The role requires attendance at project meetings, liaising with other disciplines and producing detailed design and specification to meet design and construction programmes, and ensuring coordination of design and detailing work appropriate to the project. It also requires contribution to internal management of projects and associated resourcing appropriate to experience and capability.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out structural surveys of buildings/desk studies and providing initial advice on any issues.
  • Preparation of detailed design calculations to British Standards, Eurocodes and relevant design guidance notes using relevant 3D software packages.
  • Interpreting the client brief and assisting in preparing designs at all stages from scheme through to detail.
  • Acting independently to investigate solutions, exploring options and working closely with partners and peers to develop and communicate design solutions.
  • Preparation of detailed design drawings and specifications for tender purposes.
  • Responding to client requests for information.
  • Attendance at design team meetings with clients, other design collaborators and communicating design ideas through sketches, models and presentations.
  • Assisting in the production of construction information for issue to contractors.
  • Visiting sites during the construction phase to monitor progress and provide advice to contractors.
  • Co‑ordinating design information with engineers of other disciplines.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team (with the support of the team leader).
  • Facilitating and organising meetings and CPD training events to contribute to personal and team development.
  • Supporting and participating in AKT II’s technical agenda.
  • Day‑to‑day support to colleagues from other disciplines within the office.
  • Attending team meetings with both internal and external disciplines.

Required Skills

  • Sound knowledge of structural design in concrete and steel structures, and experience with other structural materials.
  • Experience working with Eurocodes and British Standards.
  • Strong analytical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, combined with practical building and construction knowledge.
  • Ability to design and deliver structural solutions on major and/or complex projects.
  • Initiative, proactivity, and a desire to collaborate constructively in a team for holistic building design solutions.
  • A good understanding of multidisciplinary requirements into coordinated solutions.
  • Inquisitive, creative, solution‑orientated designer who is collaborative, persuasive and engaging, ensuring client satisfaction and high‑quality solutions.
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time‑management skills, with the ability to balance tasks and prioritise to meet strict deadlines.
  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer‑literate with knowledge of design and analysis programmes.
  • Understanding of the CDM Regulations and designer responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • A good degree in Engineering.
  • Experienced Chartered Engineer (IStructE, ICE or equivalent), recently chartered or near‑chartered.
  • Demonstrated experience, competency and flexibility to rise to challenging situations and take on responsibility appropriate to capability.
