The role:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will manage a caseload of children and young people under 18 with complex, high-risk mental health needs, including those with forensic profiles or involvement in the Youth Justice system. The role centres on specialist mental health assessment, risk assessment, risk management, and delivery of evidence-based nursing interventions across community and secure settings. The CNS will also liaise closely with each young person’s Board of origin to support safe information sharing and continuity of care across placements.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
Base location – Templeton Business Centre, G40 1DA
Full-time 36 hours per week, Fixed Term post – 12 months
Shift Pattern – Monday – Friday 9 am – 5 pm
Key responsibilities:
Caseload management for young people with complex and high-risk mental health needs.
Conduct specialist mental health assessments, risk assessments, and implement risk management plans.
Deliver evidence-based nursing interventions across multiple settings, including secure residential schools.
Contribute to the development of the evidence base for interventions and practice.
Maintain robust liaison with Boards of origin to support safe transitions and information sharing.
Provide consultancy, teaching, management, and research input as part of the extended CNS role.
Support the development of multi‑agency teams, identifying training needs of staff, patients, and carers.
Coordinate and deliver educational initiatives in collaboration with colleagues.
For trainee posts: complete competencies and achieve final sign‑off before progressing to full Band 7.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Postholder should have, or be working toward, a Non‑Medical Prescribing qualification.
Trainee CNSs must undertake a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Practice.
Must demonstrate all required competencies for the role before a full Band 7 appointment.
Strong knowledge of high‑risk mental health presentations, forensic mental health, and youth justice pathways.
Skills in evidence‑based practice, multi‑agency working, risk management, and specialist assessment.
– Awareness that the national CNS job description is under review, meaning responsibilities may evolve.
