Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes

The primary aim of this post is to provide advanced tertiary‑level training in paediatric endocrinology to applicants with prior experience in the specialty. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to learning and may include overseas trainees with relevant paediatric endocrine experience who are currently working within the NHS, or individuals who are fully trained in paediatrics (CCT) or have completed at least ST6 level training (or equivalent), with exposure to endocrinology.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute effectively within a large, progressive multidisciplinary team and support the ongoing development and delivery of high‑quality endocrinology and diabetes care at BCH, in line with leading European standards.

Depending on prior experience, the role may be undertaken as a post‑CCT fellowship or as an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE), with a duration of 1‑2 years. The post is designed to provide substantial support for further subspecialty training in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes.

Main duties of the job

  • Develop expertise in endocrinology and diabetes, including tertiary endocrinology, bone disease, paediatric diabetes education, intensive diabetes management, audit, CPD, teaching, and clinical research activities.
  • Provide outpatient endocrine and diabetes services, contribute to inpatient care, and support medical staff on the Medical Day Care Unit, working in rotation with registrars.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit personal practice, attend monthly governance meetings, and develop quality and effectiveness of care.
  • Engage in clinical research, assist in recruitment of clinical trials, and present at research conferences.
  • Provide cross‑cover for specialist registrars during leave, deanery training days or short‑term sickness absence.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Eligible for full GMC registration and inclusion on the Specialist Register.
  • CCT registered or within 24 months of CCT date.
  • Demonstrable overseas or UK tertiary‑level experience in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes.
  • Higher degree (MSc, MPhil, PhD, etc.) is an advantage.
  • Completed MRCPCH or equivalent.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Minimum 6‑12 months training in tertiary level diabetes & endocrinology or a 6‑month fellow post in paediatric endocrinology or diabetes.
  • Child protection training level 3.

Professional and Managerial Knowledge

  • Eagerness to be trained in tertiary endocrinology and diabetes with a clear career path.
  • Significant experience supporting undergraduate learning.
  • Collaborative working style.
  • Previous personal research and publications.
  • GCP training and formal hybrid closed‑loop/CGMS training.
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) provider or equivalent.
