Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic, motivated and committed individual to join our friendly team within the Emergency Department at Colchester Hospital.

Opportunities to gain experience in other specialties such as ITU, Anesthetics, Paediatrics, Acute Medicine, Trauma, and Orthopaedics enable career progression and the possibility to apply for the Pathway Portfolio in Emergency Medicine.

Pay: 12 PAs (of which 1 SPA/week).

The rota offers an excellent work-life balance with annual leave spells of up to three weeks, protected weekly teaching sessions, and a new journal club being set up by FCEM consultants.

An allocated mentor within Emergency Medicine and a clinical supervisor during secondment will be provided.

Local opportunities to become ALS and ATLS instructors are available, and full support from all EM consultants to prepare for FCEM is provided.

Colchester ED is a Major Trauma Unit with a helipad and close links with the Emergency Department/Major Trauma Centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be clinically responsible to the Consultants for the reception, resuscitation, diagnosis, and initial treatment of all emergencies in the main Emergency Department. They will also be responsible for clinical decisions on appropriate admission of patients into hospital beds to special units or other hospitals, out‑patient clinics, or the care of the family doctor.

The post-holder will review ad hoc returns.

They will share responsibility for coordinating the hospital’s major incident procedure.

NOTE: This post is not recognised by the College of Emergency Medicine for professional training. It offers an opportunity to expand and consolidate the holder’s current medical knowledge and to participate in service development.

Person Specification

  • Full GMC registration
  • ALS/ATLS Provider
  • MRCEM
  • Broad experience in Emergency Medicine in the UK (Resuscitation/medical/trauma/pediatrics)
  • At least 6 months experience at a Senior/Registrar Level in a consultant‑led emergency department
  • 4 years total post‑graduate experience
  • FRCEM
  • APLS/PALS provider
  • Life support instructor
  • Ultrasound Level 1 signed off
