Consultant Radiographer Breast (Development Role)
Band 8c Consultant Radiographer (Annex 21) development post, in line with NHS Agenda for Change.
Band 8c Annex 21 development post
The closing date is 27 May 2026
* This is a Band 8c Annex 21 development post*
We require a BSc (Hons) in Radiography (or equivalent), HCPC registration, and a Postgraduate Award in Mammography (or equivalent). A full MSc in Advanced Mammography Practice must be held or be completed during employment.
Completion of the full MSc is essential for progression to independent practice as a Responsible Assessor. A structured development plan will be provided if the candidate has not yet met all requirements.
During Annex 21, if all modules are not already completed, the Trust will support completion of remaining MSc modules and development of advanced clinical skills under supervision. This includes progression through key modules, demonstrating autonomous practice, and meeting competency and governance standards.
Progression to the full Band 8c Consultant Radiographer role will occur upon completion of the full MSc (including dissertation), demonstration of competence across all four pillars of Consultant Practice, independent practice as a Responsible Assessor, and formal sign‑off.
The length of the Annex 21 period will depend on the applicant’s existing experience, skills and qualifications, and will be agreed following interview along with a detailed development and progression framework.
Main duties of the job
Due to the nature of the work, mammography posts have a gender protected character. This is a genuine occupational requirement and therefore this post is exempt under Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010 and, therefore, only female applicants should apply.
The post-holder will provide expert level of care in breast imaging services, exercise the highest degree of professional autonomy, and embed values‑based practice across pathways, services, organisations and systems, working in partnership with individuals and teams. They will develop expertise in professional practice and independent decision‑making within complex and unpredictable contexts, and demonstrate evidence‑informed practice.
Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver seamless continuity of service for the NHS Breast Screening Programme and symptomatic breast services at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.
Liaise with colleagues regarding annual leave and during times of increased workload, ensuring clinical workload commitments are covered to maintain continuity in both screening and symptomatic services.
About us
We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team – clinical or non‑clinical – plays a vital role in ensuring that patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times.
We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words, but through actions: by listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising individual needs, feelings, and circumstances of those in our care.
Effective communication is central to safe and high-quality healthcare. We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explain information in a meaningful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding.
By joining our team, you commit to uphold these values, ensuring that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction every day.
