Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to take full ownership of our payroll function. This is a fully remote, full‑time, autonomous role responsible for the end‑to‑end delivery of client payrolls. You will be the primary point of contact for payroll queries and play a key role in ensuring accuracy, compliance, and a high‑quality client experience.

Location: Remote (UK‑based). Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm. Salary: £35,000 – £42,000 (DOE).

Key Responsibilities

  • End‑to‑end processing of weekly and monthly UK payrolls
  • Managing PAYE schemes and payroll calculations
  • Handling statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP, etc.)
  • Managing pensions and auto‑enrolment compliance
  • Submitting RTI (FPS / EPS) filings accurately and on time
  • Reviewing payroll outputs and payslips before release
  • Managing payroll year‑end processes (P60s, P11Ds where applicable)
  • Ensuring ongoing compliance with HMRC and UK payroll legislation

Client & Practice Support

  • Act as the main point of contact for payroll clients
  • Respond to payroll queries from clients and internal teams
  • Liaise with HMRC, pension providers, and other third parties
  • Support the onboarding of new payroll clients
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation

Wider Business Support

  • Support other areas of the practice during busy periods, including:
  • Basic bookkeeping
  • VAT or administrative assistance
  • Process improvements and internal documentation
  • Ad‑hoc projects

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience managing UK payroll end‑to‑end
  • Strong knowledge of PAYE, RTI, and auto‑enrolment
  • Experience using payroll software (BrightPay, Xero Payroll, Sage, or similar)
  • High attention to detail and excellent organisational skills
  • Confident communicator, comfortable dealing directly with clients
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a remote environment

Desirable

  • Experience within an accountancy practice or payroll bureau
  • Exposure to bookkeeping or VAT
  • Familiarity with Xero and cloud‑based accounting systems
