Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Senior Arthroplasty Fellow, to commence as soon as possible until 3rd August 2027. The post holder will work with the Clinical Service Lead, the Complex Arthroplasty Team and the Operational Management team to facilitate the management of Complex Arthroplasty Pathways and to deliver patient‑centred planning and safe high‑quality care. The Trauma and Orthopaedic department at UHB undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures from primary hip and knee arthroplasty surgery through to custom made implants for complex revision cases with massive bone loss. We also undertake a large volume of acute prosthetic joint infection and peri‑prosthetic fracture across three hospital sites. The appointee will gain experience in the management of complex arthroplasty cases, including exposure to hip and knee replacement, revision hip and knee surgery, opportunities to experience trauma surgery, pelvic surgery and related procedures on an ad‑hoc basis.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

  • Coordinate and deliver safe, high‑quality care within the area, incorporating planning and managing services across all relevant sites to ensure the delivery of safe, high‑quality care for all patients within the Complex Arthroplasty Service.
  • Promote effective and efficient communication with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team, patients and relatives to support and deliver high‑quality clinical outcomes, reduce waiting times and utilise resources efficiently.
  • Ensure confidentiality is always maintained and a professional manner is demonstrated.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Undertake regular ward rounds of the complex arthroplasty patients.
  • Attend the weekly Complex Arthroplasty MDT at UHB and provide an update on the complex arthroplasty patients.
  • Participate in referrals as required and submit to the Midlands Regional Centre (MRC) MDT.
  • Maintain and coordinate safe and efficient cross‑site care of the complex arthroplasty patients.
  • Liaise with the operational team and wider MDT to plan and coordinate theatre lists.
  • Support ongoing development of the Complex Arthroplasty MDT and clinical pathways.
  • Participate in regular audit and research.
  • Organise regional/national arthroplasty seminars and meetings.
  • On‑call duties – the fellow may be expected to perform on‑call duties on some weekends but will not participate in the general Trauma on‑call rota.

Clinical Governance

  • Participate in all aspects of the clinical governance structure developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.
  • Participate in audit of personal clinical practice as well as involvement in department/speciality reviews.
  • Commit to continuing professional development and meet the requirements for Continuing Medical Education defined by the relevant Royal College, with appropriate study leave support available.
  • Maintain awareness of professional standards and responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice.
  • Respond promptly to any circumstances which may result in increased clinical risk of adverse outcome.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Qualified Medical Practitioner
  • GMC registered with a licence to practice
  • FRCS (Tr+Ortho)

Qualifications (Desirable)

  • Post CCT/CESR
  • Distinctions, Prizes, Awards, Scholarships
  • Higher Degrees
  • Higher Teaching Qualification
  • Management training

Experience (Essential)

  • 12 months Lower Limb Arthroplasty experience
  • Demonstrate competence in the management of Lower Limb Arthroplasty patients
  • Demonstrate an interest in Prosthetic joint infection and revision lower limb arthroplasty
  • Experience of contributing and organising an Arthroplasty MDT

Additional Experience and Interest

  • Knowledge and experience of leading significant change to patient pathways, delivering tangible and sustained improvements
