Job Description:

The Senior Project Manager delivers project objectives with respect to the six key areas of performance: Health & Safety, Quality, Cost, Environment, Delivery and People.

Responsibilities

  • Stakeholder Management – Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with the Portfolio Manager, Self Delivery Lead, Delivery Leads, other colleagues, Construction/Supervisor Teams and key internal and external stakeholders, to ensure full mutual understanding of the projects’ delivery objectives, report on and review project performance, and agree solutions to issues.
  • Maintain compliance with the DBFO contract clarifying roles and responsibilities within the team, resolving risks and issues in a timely manner, producing accurate reports, and creating and maintaining specified records including change management.
  • Identify and evaluate emerging risks, issues, dependencies and constraints associated with the project, escalating where appropriate, and develop, agree and implement solutions to overcome these.
  • Lead and oversee projects throughout their whole lifecycle through feasibility, design, construction and handover, informing investment proposals for the clients at each stage.
  • Maintain global or master programme for whole portfolios.
  • Oversee programme income and cost profiles, challenging PMs’ input.
  • Client liaison on a project and portfolio level.
  • Chair and drive regular (fortnightly) project reviews to ensure the following are current and live:
    • Project and division risk register.
    • Project risk category (on financial spreadsheet).
    • Review submissions register.
    • Review of Correspondence Register progress comments and milestone dates.
    • Project income and cost forecast (review of PM profiles).
    • Project change.
    • Project priorities (for resource allocation).
    • Manage correspondence and queries through Aconex.
  • Project change control and review processes and procedures.
  • Allocate projects to PMs based on appropriate knowledge, experience, ability and capability (workload).
  • Work closely with Construction/Supervisor team to ensure permits, certificates and site reporting are managed correctly and align to project needs.
  • Manage NEC Contracts options as Project Manager.
  • Travel as required to other offices and depots on the network.
  • Periodic site visits, including night shift.
  • Hold full driving licence.
  • Attend the office 60% of the week.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Dynamic and self‑motivated individual with strong project background to deliver complex mechanical, electrical and technology highways schemes ranging in value from £100k to £8m+.
  • Project Management skills, preferably supported by recognised PM qualifications such as PRINCE2, APMP etc.
  • Minimum HNC/HND (or equivalent) in mechanical, electrical, civil engineering or other construction‑based discipline.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of other design areas.
  • Understanding of environmental requirements of schemes.
  • Experience coordinating interfaces with design teams and external resources.
  • Understanding of H&S requirements related to highway construction & maintenance works.
  • Knowledge of CDM and other H&S legislation; competent in exercising duties under CDM.
  • Applicable CSCS card.
  • Team leadership and management experience in driving performance and productivity.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong customer focus with a service‑delivery mindset.
  • Commercial understanding and budgetary control experience.
  • Understanding of Lean principles.

  • Experience at senior level in delivery of highways construction & maintenance operations or similar transferable experience.
  • Previous experience in a similar role with demonstrable competence in the majority of responsibilities listed above.
