Job Description:

We are looking for a Locum Consultant in Infection/Consultant Clinical Scientist (Microbiology or Microbiology/Infectious Diseases) to join the Microbiology Department for 6 months.

The Department is involved in a Trust‑wide project to create a cohesive infection service across all hospitals within the Trust, incorporating colleagues in microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, sexual and reproductive health, respiratory medicine, genitourinary medicine, and infection prevention.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team and be a driving force in further developing our infection service. These posts are well suited to patient‑facing clinicians looking to develop specialist interests in any of the many areas available. From an infection perspective the opportunities to develop on existing links are considerable.

The post includes cross‑site working as the job plan requires. The clinical laboratory is located on the Oxford Road Campus.

Qualifications – Essential

  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within 6 months of interview)
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent

Qualifications – Desirable

  • Postgraduate thesis
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Diploma in Infection, Prevention & Control

Clinical Experience – Essential

  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Microbiology or Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases, or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
  • Ability to offer expert opinion and deal with a range of problems
  • Ability to develop an area of specialist clinical interest

Clinical Experience – Desirable

  • Experience in a range of infection control problems, including outbreak management
  • Experience in management of in‑patients or infection clinics including OPAT

Management and Administrative Experience – Essential

  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage priorities
  • Understanding of clinical governance network
  • Evidence of audit

Management and Administrative Experience – Desirable

  • Formal management training

Teaching Experience – Essential

  • Experience of supervising foundation year trainees or equivalent
  • Ability to teach clinical and laboratory skills

Teaching Experience – Desirable

  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates
  • Experience of teaching medical trainees
  • Formal teaching qualification

Research Experience – Essential

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems

Research Experience – Desirable

  • Presentations and/or abstracts
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals

Personal Attributes – Essential

  • Ability to work in a team
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Enquiring critical approach to work
  • Caring attitude to patients
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
  • Commitment to continuing medical education
