Senior Clinical Fellow in Haematology (CAR-T)

Job Title: CAR T Fellow

Duration: 12 months

Purpose for Fixed Term: Training Contract

Main duties of the job

  • Review patients referred for CAR‑T cell therapy in an outpatient or inpatient setting.
  • Liaise with referring teams, CAR‑T consultants and the CAR‑T coordination team for planning of apheresis, bridging, infusion, discharge and post‑CAR‑T follow‑up.
  • Manage patients undergoing CAR‑T cell therapy in inpatient and ambulatory settings, in collaboration with subspecialty teams and supervising CAR‑T consultants.
  • Refer to other specialty teams (e.g. intensive care, neurology, cardiology) as required to provide optimal care.
  • Discuss cases at the Southampton Lymphoma and Leukaemia/Myeloma MDTs and the CAR‑T MDT.
  • Actively contribute to the development and expansion of the CAR‑T service within the WBMT&CT, in collaboration with subspecialty CAR‑T leads.
  • Recruit and manage patients within CAR‑T clinical trials.
  • Collaborate with colleagues regionally through MDT and network‑wide working.
  • Develop regional CAR‑T referral pathways in collaboration with CAR‑T lead consultants.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, including morbidity and mortality meetings and relevant committees.
  • Contribute to audit activities of the WBMT&CT Programme and the wider haematology department, including regional and national audits.
  • Assist in collection and analysis of local data for publication and contribute to national CAR‑T data panels.
  • Undertake procedures relevant to haematology, including bone marrow biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy and tunnelled central catheter removal.
  • Engage with the educational programme, attending regular educational meetings.
  • Pre‑CCT post‑holders will maintain an educational portfolio mirroring their training stage; Post‑CCT fellows will engage with the Trust’s existing appraisal system.
  • Cover other haematology specialty teams during planned and unplanned absences.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors and will be assigned a named educational supervisor. Continued Professional Development (CPD) is actively supported, with options for study leave.

Grades for Trust‑appointed fellows receive a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, plus any additional remuneration for hours as set out in the doctors’ work schedule (e.g. weekend allowance and enhanced pay hours).

Salary is assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria include: minimum of 6 years of specialty training, relevant higher specialty exam (FRCP, FRCA, FRCS), and a portfolio demonstrating progression in line with the curriculum for the speciality.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP Part 1 or higher specialty membership exam
  • MRCP Part 2 or higher specialty membership exam
  • Appropriate knowledge base and sound clinical judgement
  • Internal Medicine experience ≥12 months or Clinical Haematology experience ≥6 months
  • Experience of out‑of‑hours and emergency care
  • MRCP PACES
  • Experience working as a doctor in the NHS
  • Internal medicine experience ≥24 months
  • Clinical haematology experience ≥12 months
  • Quality improvement or education project completion
  • Publications related to haematology
  • Presentations and/or teaching related to haematology
  • Experience of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies

Aptitudes and skills

  • Ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and its impact on patients and staff
  • Effective communication and liaison skills with patients and colleagues (verbal and written in English)
  • Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Capability to work with indirect supervision in haematology inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Understanding of principles of cancer and haematology treatment
