Consultant Psychiatrist – Bethlem Adolescent Unit

Closing date: 21 April 2026.

The post is part‑time (0.6 WTE) and based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, Beckenham, in the Bethlem Adolescent Unit (BAU). It works alongside another substantive consultant, Dr Natalia Wielgosz. The BAU is a multidisciplinary, 12‑bed open inpatient unit for adolescents 12–17 years, including up to 3 day‑patient places. The medical team includes a part‑time Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, specialist and core resident doctors.

Main duties of the job

  • Clinical and medical leadership for the MDT and junior doctors, including direct assessment and formulation of treatment plans for all admissions.
  • Supervision of junior medical staff; appointment requires accreditation as a clinical supervisor.
  • Attend and chair clinical meetings and other management meetings.
  • Communicate with the MDT, other professionals, teams and agencies.
  • Provide psychiatric input for routine and emergency care of children and young people (12–17 yrs).
  • Give advice to other CAMHS teams.
  • Participate in peer and group supervision, training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff, and attend CPD events.
  • Maintain GMC registration, Licence to Practice, Section 12 and Approved Clinician approvals, and CPD submissions to the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Maintain the electronic patient clinical records and ensure compliance with Trust documentation standards.
  • Safeguard and protect children throughout the service and within the CPA process.
  • Contribute to research, evaluation, audit and quality improvement projects.
  • Participate in investigations of serious incidents and complaints as a senior investigator.
  • Occasional cover for colleagues.

Person Specification – Qualifications

  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration with Licence to Practice.
  • Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status (required within first year if not already).
  • Higher degree or research qualifications.
  • Higher management qualification.

Training and Experience

  • Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry experience.
  • Assessment and management of complex co‑morbidities.
  • Training in ADI and ADOS.
  • Training in investigation of complaints and serious incidents.

Clinical Skills

  • Excellent leadership and adolescent psychiatric assessment skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with children, adolescents, and parents.
  • Teamworking and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Safeguarding knowledge and capacity/consent assessment.
  • Expertise in Mental Health Act and other legal frameworks for children.
  • CBT or equivalent therapeutic intervention at postgraduate level.
  • Experience developing and leading inpatient psychiatric care services.

Management and Audit

  • Participation and experience in audit or QI projects.
  • Evidence of business planning for clinical services.

Teaching

  • Experience teaching multidisciplinary disciplines.

Research

  • Involvement in research projects.
  • Book publications.

Personal Skills

  • Excellent communication in English (oral and written).
  • Ability to work flexibly across hospital and community sites.
  • Probity.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
