In our quest to deliver patient-focused quality care, we are looking to recruit a highly motivated, innovative and enthusiastic Substance Misuse Lead Nurse to join our forward‑thinking, friendly and expanding Health & Justice team at HMP Feltham B.
By joining our Prisons Health Care Team, you will look after the healthcare needs of patients residing in secure environments and can have a real impact on promoting health and well‑being. Our services operate on a 7‑day week model to ensure patient care is always managed and maintained to the highest of standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical support for clients with substance dependence, including high‑risk assessment and management.
- Evaluate and improve clinical and psychosocial service delivery, ensuring continuous care and best use of nursing provision.
- Lead a multidisciplinary team, providing advice and guidance on clinical interventions.
- Ensure safe management of high‑risk areas, conduct risk assessments and handle hazardous materials, bodily fluids and challenging behaviour.
- Maintain clear, empathic communication with patients and relevant professionals, respecting confidentiality and safeguarding concerns.
- Implement and review treatment plans in line with the NMC Code of Conduct, local guidelines and the 6 C’s framework.
- Automate and deliver bio‑psychological and clinical care planning, including monitoring withdrawal symptoms and conducting UDS testing.
- Promote health and well‑being of patients, supporting complex needs to maintain optimum physical and psychological health.

Essential Criteria: Skills & Knowledge
- Sound clinical knowledge and understanding of current NHS policies and national drug issues/policies.
- Good verbal, written and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise effectively.
- Ability to assess and treat people with dual diagnosis.
- Up‑to‑date medicines management competencies.
- IT literate: competent with Microsoft Word and capable of reporting clinical activity data on patient information systems.
- Experience of managing a caseload within the community.
- Ability to treat service users with respect and dignity at all times, adopting a culturally sensitive approach that considers the whole person.
- Management experience.
- Able to build constructive relationships with warmth and empathy, using good communication skills.
Desirable Criteria: Skills & Knowledge
- Experience working with stimulant users and people with alcohol problems.
- Experience of group facilitation.
- Awareness/knowledge of research skills.
- Awareness of counselling models.
- Motivational Interviewing skills for relapse management.
Essential Criteria: Previous Experience
- Relevant post‑registration experience.
- Substantial experience working in a drug and alcohol service.
- Experience practising as an Independent Nurse Prescriber.
- Experience providing line management in a team.
- Experience undertaking risk assessments and risk management.
- Experience teaching others and willingness to undertake a Teaching and Assessing qualification within six months of commencing post.
Desirable Criteria: Previous Experience
- Community nursing experience.
- Experience delivering services to injecting drug users.
- Experience supplying and administering Hepatitis vaccines.
- Advanced assessment skills.
- Experience practising as an Independent Nurse Prescriber.
Essential Criteria: Education & Qualifications
- RMN / RGN.
- Evidence of continuing personal development and post‑registration training in nursing care assessment and treatment of substance misuse clients.
- Relevant postgraduate qualification.
- V300 Independent Nurse Prescriber or applicant who is currently enrolled in an Independent Nurse Prescribing course.
Desirable Criteria: Education & Qualifications
- Degree/Master’s in Drugs and Alcohol Studies or equivalent qualification.
- Completed Motivational Interviewing Training Module.
- Advanced assessment skills.
