Systems Development Manager

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Systems Development Manager to build a new team and own the growth of a Central London‑based engineering organization. The role involves setting strategic direction, adopting high‑quality engineering practices, and driving automation across large‑scale cloud infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

On a typical day you may dive deep into understanding root cause of customer issues, investigate metric trends, consult with senior engineers, or develop radical approaches to automate operational problems.

  • Automate the world’s most advanced cloud computing infrastructure.
  • Simplify and reinvent systems, processes, and tools to improve customer experience.
  • Build unique solutions to technical problems faced by customers.
  • Provide guidance on system architecture and recommend solutions aligned with best practices.
  • Investigate and develop new ways to improve operations when strategy is not defined.
  • Mentor, hire, and develop team members.
  • Study and learn from industry‑recognised Amazon senior and principal engineers.
  • Identify, troubleshoot and fix root causes of problems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience managing system or software development teams.
  • Hands‑on experience in systems engineering and administrative work in networking, storage systems, and operating systems.
  • Experience with agile software development methodology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems).
  • Experience with Agile engineering practices such as Kanban and continuous delivery.
  • Experience with AWS platforms, services, and design patterns.
