We are seeking a dedicated UEM Receptionist to join our Urgent & Emergency Medicine service. This is a vital frontline role where you will provide high-quality administrative and patient-facing support to ensure smooth, safe, and effective service delivery.

As the first point of contact for patients, families, and clinical teams, you will play an essential role in maintaining a welcoming environment while supporting the efficient operation of the department. This position is ideal for someone with strong communication skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.

Main duties of the job

  • To always maintain a high level of customer care. To liaise and communicate effectively and sympathetically with all visitors and patients to the department.
  • Always greet patients in a courteous manner, dealing with all enquiries politely and efficiently, displaying empathy when answering queries at the reception desk or over the telephone.
  • Monitor the welfare of patients in the waiting area and notify a member of the clinical team if concerned about a patient wellbeing. Escalating when there are patients that are deteriorating in the waiting area.
  • Escalating violence and aggression and alerting appropriate staff.
  • Ensuring the waiting room is clean and tidy. Alerting housekeeping / estates when there are any issues or blocked toilets etc.
  • To obtain patients details in a sensitive manner taking into consideration the diversities of the public.
  • To cover service needs across all receptionist roles in the UEM directorate.
  • To ensure the electronic patient record in Cerner is as up to date and accurate as possible, to the best of our knowledge. Ensure that patient records, notes, letters etc. are prepared and scanned within the agreed timescale.

Education/ Qualifications

  • Good General Education
  • GCSE Maths

Experience

  • Experience working in an office environment.
  • Experience of working in a customer focus environment.
  • Experience of working in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Experience of working in a hospital setting / NHS experience
  • 1 year experience working in an office environment.

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

  • Methodical and accurate
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to cope with demanding workload -Ability to work in shift patterns including night shifts / weekends -Organisational skills
  • Microsoft windows skills
  • Knowledge of Cerner and other in-house ICT systems.
  • Ability to work in an environment that (copilot). Diverse population / demographic that we serve.
