Position
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Charge Nurse within our 20 bedded inpatient and minor injury department based at Girvan Community Hospital. This post is offered on a fixed‑term basis until September 2027.
Hours
36 hours per week. Job share will be considered for this post. From 1 April 2026, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced. Full‑time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part‑time staff) without loss of earnings.

What You Will Do
Davidson ward is a 20 bedded unit, which caters care for patients in Ayrshire and Arran in complex medical assessment and rehab both from home and hospital. You will be accountable for all clinical decision making undertaken and for all clinical assessment and treatment under their management. Can provide leadership and guidance to all staff, including leadership and development of Deputy Charge Nurses. Reports and escalates appropriately to Clinical Nurse Manager. Responsible for teaching, supervising and assessing student nurses and junior staff, to plan and prioritise and to delegate work to other staff members.
Knowledge, Training and/or Experience Required for This Post
You should hold current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse and have relevant post‑registration experience within a community and/or hospital setting, including experience at a management level. Previous experience as a Deputy Charge Nurse is essential. You should be able to demonstrate a high level of specialist clinical knowledge and skills, equivalent to postgraduate diploma or degree level, gained through formal education and/or practical experience. You will be expected to assess patients comprehensively, analyse a range of clinical parameters, and initiate appropriate actions and interventions using advanced clinical decision‑making skills. You should have a sound working knowledge of organisational policies and procedures and be committed to maintaining and updating your professional skills and knowledge, ensuring this is appropriately documented. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. You should also be able to supervise, support, and act as a mentor to students and junior staff. A commitment to lifelong learning and ongoing professional development is required, along with a good understanding of NHS Ayrshire and Arran management systems.
