Recovery Team Leader

We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and forward‑thinking Recovery Team Leader to join our dynamic perioperative team. This is a key leadership role within a busy, multispecialty theatre environment, supporting high‑quality post‑anaesthetic care across a wide range of surgical services including general, orthopaedic, gynaecology, obstetrics, urology, ENT and breast surgery.

As Recovery Team Leader, you will coordinate the day‑to‑day running of the recovery unit, ensuring safe, efficient, and patient‑centred care. You will act as a clinical role model, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to the recovery team while fostering a positive, collaborative culture.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead and coordinate the recovery unit across multiple surgical specialities, ensuring safe staffing and smooth patient flow.
  • Provide high‑quality clinical care and act as an expert resource for post‑anaesthetic and post‑operative management.
  • Support staff development through coaching, supervision, competency assessment, and identifying training needs.
  • Promote staff wellbeing, engagement, and retention through effective communication, visibility, and supportive leadership.
  • Work closely with theatre coordinators, anaesthetists, surgeons, and wider MDT to maintain high standards of care and operational efficiency.
  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives, audit, and quality assurance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical governance, infection control, and health & safety standards.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Excellent clinical skills within specialty
  • Proven Senior Recovery Practitioner level with knowledge of list suite management
  • Team development and coaching experience
  • Teaching experience
  • Evidence of leadership and management experience as Senior Recovery Practitioner

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse Part 1
  • Evidence of post‑registration qualification/specialist development.
  • Undertaken or willing to undertake recognised management course.
  • Recovery Specialist Practice Award or similar.

Knowledge

  • Problem‑solving approach
  • Day‑to‑day management responsibilities
  • Resource management within team
  • Excellent clinical skills within the post‑operative setting
