We are delighted to share an exciting opportunity for someone with passion, drive and commitment to take on the role of Deputy Team Leader on the Bird Team at Banham Zoo and we would like to invite those with appropriate experience to apply.

This is a full-time, permanent role.

Key aspects of the role – in brief – include:

• To assist the Team Leader in all aspects of operational tasks, whether in staffing, animal-related issues or health & safety & compliance.




• Lead in the absence of the Team Leader.




• To stand in as Animal Duty Manager if required.




• To be willing to become part of the firearms team.




• To maintain high standards of cleanliness with regards to animal husbandry.




• To assist the Team Leader in managing and delivering the animal training and behavioural condition plans for the team.




• Monitor and report on all aspects of the dietary process.




• Compliance with all health & safety protocols and documentation.




• Prepared to carry out a range of minor veterinary procedures / treatments.

Person Specification

• Extensive practical experience and taxonomy knowledge of animals, ideally including birds, within a zoological collection.




• Experience of managing a team of staff with varying levels of knowledge and skill sets.




• Strong teamwork, communication and observation skills.




• Familiarity with professional zoo associations such as BIAZA and EAZA.




• A relevant high‑level qualification, such as a qualification in biology (MSc or BSc) and completion of the DMZAA would be desirable.




• Full driving licence.




• Ability to work flexibly, including weekends, bank holidays and occasional out of hours support.




• Able to use their initiative to resolve challenging situations to ensure a positive outcome.




• A good working knowledge of IT systems, including but not limited to ZIMS, Microsoft packages and social media platforms.
