Fullstack Software Engineer (National Security)
Location: Cheltenham
Salary: £55,000 – £90,000 depending on experience and SFIA grading
Clearance: Active eDV clearance required
The Opportunity
You’ll be joining an engineering‑led organisation working at the heart of UK National Security and Defence. The focus is on building systems that support critical operations, where reliability, performance and security are essential.
This is not a traditional consultancy environment. The organisation operates more like an R&D‑led engineering business, where you’re trusted to solve complex problems rather than deliver against a rigid brief.
Teams are small, multidisciplinary and built on trust. You’ll work closely with software engineers, data specialists and systems engineers, in an environment where collaboration and different perspectives are valued.
There is a strong emphasis on people and culture. The business has a flat structure, giving engineers real ownership and a voice in how things are built. They are also moving towards an Employee Ownership Trust, reinforcing a long‑term, shared approach to success.
There is variety in the work, with opportunities to move across different programmes within the National Security and Defence space. The combination of technical depth, autonomy and meaningful impact is what tends to attract engineers here.
The Role
You’ll focus on the full software lifecycle, working within complex and high‑assurance environments. The work involves designing, building and improving systems that operate in demanding and secure settings. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers and stakeholders, contributing to both technical design and delivery.
Responsibilities include:
- Designing and developing services using Python, GO, JavaScript, C#
- Building and maintaining APIs and microservices within distributed systems
- Deploying and managing applications using Kubernetes and Docker
- Contributing to CI/CD pipelines to support reliable and repeatable delivery
- Working on distributed systems where performance, scalability and resilience are key
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to integrate services into wider platforms
- You’ll likely have experience with at least two of Python, Go or Kubernetes.
- The emphasis is on your engineering mindset rather than a perfect match to every technology listed.
We’re open to different career paths and backgrounds. If you have strong software experience and enjoy solving complex problems, you’re likely to be a good fit.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must hold active eDV clearance. This typically requires sole UK nationality and long‑term UK residency.
