European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) seeks an experienced Full Stack Software Developer for its BioSamples team in the United Kingdom. The role focuses on developing scalable systems that support biological metadata submission, validation, and retrieval services across international scientific platforms, and collaborates closely with developers, bioinformaticians, product owners, and data curators.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain backend services supporting biological metadata submission and validation systems.
  • Design scalable APIs and processing pipelines that handle millions of scientific sample records efficiently.
  • Build user‑facing web applications that support biological data exploration and metadata management workflows.
  • Collaborate with developers, bioinformaticians, and product owners to improve scientific platform capabilities.
  • Contribute to system architecture planning and long‑term technical platform evolution initiatives.
  • Develop reliable, scalable, and maintainable software solutions to support open scientific data accessibility worldwide.
  • Support metadata interoperability and FAIR data principles across international life‑science infrastructure systems.
  • Participate in modern software engineering workflows involving CI/CD and AI‑assisted development tools.

Requirements

  • University degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience developing full‑stack software applications.
  • Strong programming expertise using Java and Spring framework technologies.
  • Experience building RESTful APIs and scalable backend application services.
  • Proficiency in developing frontend applications using Angular, React, or related web frameworks.
  • Strong database experience with MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, or similar technologies.
  • Practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Git, and Unix/Linux development environments.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and English language skills.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools, and event‑driven architectures is highly advantageous.
  • Interest or experience in bioinformatics, FAIR data principles, or scientific research infrastructure is preferred.
