Job Description:

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust – Ward Clerk Acute Respiratory Unit (closing date: 27 May 2026). This vacancy is only open to Herefordshire and Worcestershire NHS staff (including PCN/GP Practices).

About the role

This role supports the Acute Respiratory Unit and admits day‑case patients for the Pleural Day Case Team. It is a 24.5 hour per week, 12‑month maternity leave cover based at Worcester Royal Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • Receive general telephone calls, record messages, and deal with initial enquiries in a friendly, professional manner, referring calls to the relevant staff.
  • Maintain real‑time updates of the ward whiteboard, complete PAS preparation and scanning of documentation, and update and maintain filing systems.
  • Maintain records related to admissions, discharges, and ward clinical IT systems.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Support IT systems including patient tracker, patient demographic updates, “Call Me” system, and daily consultant allocation processes.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and clerical support to the ward and professional qualified staff.
  • Act as the first point of contact for all users of the service.
  • Handle medical notes and VDU work; be prepared for exposure to violence and aggression.
  • Work under the guidance of the ward/department manager; objectives, performance, and training needs are regularly reviewed.
  • Possibly work across different directorates/departments within the Trust, normally attached to one area.

Special requirements

Any required computer training must be gained within 3 months.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Business Administration Level 2

Experience

  • In‑depth working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Experience working in a busy, patient‑focused environment
  • Ability to prioritise and organise a changing workload and work systematically towards deadlines
  • Experience working in an NHS environment
  • Experience with PAS, Bluespier, and CLIP
