Midwifery Continuity Team Leader

We are seeking a leader to head the Caledonian Continuity Team, delivering personalised maternity care across the pregnancy journey. As the Midwifery Continuity Team Leader, you will shape a model of care where relationships matter, continuity is real, and women feel known, heard and supported from booking through to postnatal discharge.

You will lead a skilled, community‑based team providing care across home, birth centre and hospital settings, balancing clinical expertise with strong leadership and coordination. This role suits someone who thrives on autonomy, values continuity of carer, and is passionate about improving outcomes and reducing inequalities through relationship‑based care.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership of the Caledonian Continuity Team, ensuring safe, effective and compassionate care across antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal pathways.
  • Oversee caseload management, coordinate staffing and on‑call provision, and maintain high standards of clinical practice within a community‑based model.
  • Support and develop your team through supervision, mentorship and performance management, creating a positive, accountable and supportive working culture.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to manage complexity, contribute to personalised care planning and ensure women receive consistent, informed and responsive care.
  • Monitor quality and safety, respond to concerns and complaints, and use feedback and incident data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead confidently in a fast‑paced, evolving service, demonstrating strong leadership, organisational and communication skills, and the ability to make sound decisions and work flexibly.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent.
  • Leadership qualification.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Registered Midwife.
  • Masters level (preferred).

Experience

  • Significant midwifery experience in all areas of midwifery.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge and understanding of key issues facing the NHS and the broader improvement agenda.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring more junior staff and/or SSSA.
  • Experience using a trauma‑informed approach, particularly when caring for vulnerable patients with complex needs.
  • Ability to build professional relationships and rapport with staff at all levels.
  • Evidence of involvement with quality improvement or change management in a clinical area.
  • Experience of audit or guideline writing.
  • Experience of undertaking research.

Skills and Abilities

  • Track record of effectively handling competing priorities, meeting challenging deadlines, and delivering under pressure.
  • Strong IT skills, familiar with MS Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Able to challenge clinical decisions in the best interest of patients.
  • Demonstrating awareness of maternity related clinical governance.
  • Highly professional role model.
  • Able to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to provide care to women whilst remaining impartial of opinion and maintaining confidentiality.

Specific Requirements

  • Takes personal responsibility to ensure effective prevention and control of health‑care associated infections is embedded into everyday practice and applied consistently.

Salary

£58,133 to £65,261 a year per annum inclusive of HCAS.
