What if the next generation of epigenetic diagnostics ran on a test you helped designing? Tagomics is a Cambridge-based biotechnology company developing a next‑generation multi‑omic biomarker discovery platform to transform how disease and drug safety are understood, measured, and monitored. Originating from pioneering research by Dr Robert Neely and colleagues at the University of Birmingham, our proprietary technology integrates genetic, epigenetic, and fragmentomic features from circulating cell‑free DNA. Combined with advanced bioinformatics and machine learning, this enables deep biological insight across applications ranging from early cancer detection to drug safety and organ health monitoring. We have the science, the funding, and the momentum, and we’re now building the production‑grade platform for our first products.
To achieve this, we are expanding our multidisciplinary team at Babraham Research Campus, one of Europe’s leading life‑science hubs.
The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated Scientist or Senior Scientist to join our Product Development team. This is a laboratory‑based, individual contributor role focused on the design and development of high‑throughput genomic assays for cancer detection. You will be instrumental in executing bench studies, managing technical documentation, and ensuring all developments meet strict design control and regulatory standards.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Assay Optimization – Design, conduct, and interpret laboratory studies to enhance and establish the performance of complex genomic diagnostic tests, including guard banding, critical parameter management, stability testing, verification, and validation.
- Technical Documentation – Author high‑quality SOPs, experimental protocols, and technical reports that form part of the Tagomics eQMS and the products’ Design History Files (DHF), ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Design Transfer – Support the development of kitting solutions, liaise with manufacturing partners for successful design transfer, and ensure product robustness by performing inspections, full functional testing, and QC reporting.
- Operational Excellence – Maintain expertise in clinical sample preparation and quality control within a high‑throughput production environment, adhering to the highest standards of traceability and referential integrity.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration – Partner with Data Science and Bioinformatics to implement visualization tools for proactive trend identification. Collaborate seamlessly with Automation, Clinical, Regulatory, and Marketing teams.
- Continuous Improvement – Develop and refine quality control procedures and qualification protocols for reagents and laboratory instrumentation.
- Technical Troubleshooting – Provide collaborative support for troubleshooting needs across the laboratory workflow to maintain operational efficiency.
Essential – What We’re Looking For
- Experienced Bench Scientist – Hands‑on experience in molecular biology, with a deep understanding of the biochemistry behind multi‑component methods (from sample prep to assay execution).
- Platform Expert – Proven track record with high‑throughput platforms, including NGS, microarrays, hybridisation systems, and qPCR.
- Results‑Oriented – A demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and optimise molecular biology techniques within a commercial or regulated environment.
- Collaborative Leader – Strong ability to support the full lifecycle of laboratory projects – from design to completion – while mentoring others in routine lab activities.
- Mission‑Driven – A strong sense of urgency and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment, recognising that product timeliness is vital to commercial success and patient care.
- Strong Communicator – Exceptional written and oral communication skills, capable of presenting complex technical data clearly to diverse stakeholders.
- Education – PhD in biology, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field with years of industry experience in product development.
Desirable
- Domain expertise in cancer.
- Technical knowledge of epigenetic and NGS technologies.
- Good understanding of Design Controls and Product Development Process (PDP).
- Capable of leading projects with cross‑functional teams.
- Experience working under an ISO/GCLP accredited QMS (Quality Management System).
Our Hiring Process
- Online screening call – a conversation about your experience, technical knowledge, goals, and questions about the role.
- In‑person team interview – a short presentation on a topic of your choice, technical discussions, meet the team and your future colleagues.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary.
- Share option scheme.
- Matched pension contributions up to 8 %.
- Private healthcare.
- Performance‑related bonus scheme.
We’re based at Babraham Research Campus, one of Europe’s leading life‑science hubs, with modern accessible offices, on‑site parking, a gym, restaurant and pub, and within easy reach of the Cambridgeshire countryside.
Joining at this stage gives you the opportunity to genuinely influence technology choices, engineering culture, and the direction of a company at a pivotal stage of growth.
