Locum Consultant Paediatric & Adolescent Oncologist with Late Effects
This fixed‑term (12 months) locum position covers maternity leave and is based at the Children and Young People’s Cancer Service (CYPCS) at University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre.
Main responsibilities
- Provide emergency duties, including any work arising during on‑call periods.
- Contribute to the CYPCS acute on‑call rota as a 1:7 consultant on call for paediatric oncology; 1:7 weekend rota with ward rounds on site each day, subsequently on‑call from home with return if necessary.
- Attend approximately 10 weeks per year (1 in 8) with clinical responsibility for acute oncology care in inpatient, ambulatory care, Grafton Way building radiotherapy suites and outpatient environments; conduct a minimum of two formal ward rounds per week.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, including late effects MDTs, psychosocial MDTs in paediatrics and TYA, to advocate for own patients.
- Lead outpatient clinics, conducting 2–3 clinics per week with one dedicated to late effects.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Oncology team to provide paediatric oncology expertise for external patients referred for proton‑beam and photon radiotherapy; handle administrative tasks such as referrals and notes.
- Develop subspecialty service; carry out undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and educational supervision (where accredited).
- Engage in research, governance and quality improvement activities; represent the division on committees and undertake personal CPD.
Knowledge and Qualifications
- Full MRCPCH examination or equivalent; full GMC registration (non‑UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register by appointment date).
- CCST in Paediatric Oncology or within 6 months of CCST; or local employment doctors must submit evidence portfolio to GMC via the Portfolio Pathway.
- Higher degree (MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent).
Clinical Experience
- Senior clinical experience in late effects and a good working knowledge of the long‑term consequences of cancer treatment.
- Senior clinical experience in managing paediatric and teenage cancer.
- Experience in supportive care of patients undergoing radiotherapy.
- Valid level 3 safeguarding, BLS training and APLS.
- Membership or participation in national late effects groups.
- Knowledge of complications of retinoblastoma treatment and long‑term consequences.
- Experience working within NHS; locum consultant experience or evidence of acting up.
- Research and clinical trial experience within late effects; evidence of regional or national leadership role.
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to work effectively within MDTs and external networks.
- Fluent written and spoken English; willingness to work unsupervised and make decisions.
- Experience of clinical management of complex patients; good communication skills including breaking bad news.
- Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively; meets GMC “Good Medical Practice” requirements.
- Knowledge of risk management, annual job planning, appraisal review process; familiarity with EPR.
- Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence; participation in clinical audit/QI projects.
- Willingness to teach all grades of multiprofessional staff; “Training the Trainers” certification.

Benefits & Contract Details
- Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum + London weighting, pro‑rata (on‑call Cat A 5%).
- Contract: Fixed term, 12 months.
- Working pattern: Part‑time.
