Bud Flanagan East Ward is a 16‑bed unit caring for patients with Leukaemia, Myeloma and Lymphoma throughout their treatment pathway. On the ward we undertake a variety of bone marrow transplants including sibling, unrelated and cord donors. Our partner ward, Bud Flanagan West, mainly cares for patients undergoing autologous transplants and also manages our Ambulatory Inpatient Service.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality, evidence‑led care to patients.
  • Exercise clinical judgment and decision‑making about patient needs in terms of long‑term goals or plans.
  • Participate fully in the day‑to‑day organisation and running of clinical trials, including the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaising as required with trial sponsors.
  • Plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge or transfer, discussing this with the patient, their family and multi‑disciplinary teams, and alerting the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes.
  • Set goals for each of the identified nursing issues and encourage or teach other nursing staff to do the same.
  • Assist patients in achieving set goals through care planning.
  • Provide skilled care and expertise in venepuncture and/or cannulation.
  • Assess patients for a suitable central venous access device, provide education to patients on the care and management of central venous access devices and adopt a problem‑solving approach to managing complications with all vascular access devices.
  • Be knowledgeable of any treatment in progress in the specialty and adopt a problem‑solving approach to symptom management and minimising adverse reactions.
  • Provide advice, information and support to patients regarding their participation in clinical research, facilitating effective informed consent and ensuring patients understand the nature of the clinical trial, voluntary entry and the right to withdraw at any time without prejudice to treatment. Refer to other healthcare professionals where appropriate.
  • Utilise managerial skills within the clinical setting, including planning duty rotas that match unit needs with available expertise.
  • Liaise with other hospital staff and departments to promote and maintain good working relationships and ensure high standards of service.
