Purpose

Responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the 6th Form students – behaviour, attendance & punctuality, dress code and more.

Main Duties

  • To ensure that the Year 12 and Year 13 study areas are effective learning environments for the students to work in.
  • Be alert to Child Protection/Safe‑guarding concerns amongst 6th Form students, and take appropriate action/seek advice to address concerns.
  • Liaise with external agencies, such as CAMHS, to ensure students in need of additional support receive the help they require.
  • Manage the students in the 6th Form Detention and reprimand any students who do not attend the detention.
  • Support the most able students for applications to the most competitive undergraduate courses, such as Oxbridge or Medicine.
  • Ensure the smooth running of the 6th Form Silent Study areas, working with the 6th Form Study Centre Supervisor and staff covering the Silent Study Centre.
  • Develop leadership opportunities in the 6th Form, including the 6th Form Leadership Team and involvement of 6th Form students in supporting Students in Years 7–11.
  • Work with the Heads of Year 12 and Year 13 for the organisation and delivery of the Year 12 and Year 13 celebration events and the Year 12 and Year 13 Preparation Evening.
  • Organise the English Language GCSE and Maths GCSE re‑sit groups to progress students towards obtaining a Grade 4 or above.
  • Manage the Year 13 Senior Prefect Team with the Head of Year 13, ensuring active roles at school events such as the Year 7 Open Evening and the 6th Form Open Evening.

Destinations Process

  • Work with the Head of Year 12 to organise Post 18 Days in the Summer Term for Year 12 students.
  • Provide information to Year 12 students on routes after A Levels (University, Work, Gap Years) and present activities such as Writing a Personal Statement and Student Finance.
  • Organise the Post 18 Parent Information Evening in the Spring Term to inform parents of Post 18 options.

UCAS

  • Work with the Head of Year 13 to equip Year 13 students with the knowledge to make a successful UCAS application.
  • Monitor the submission of tutor references and check UCAS references before submission.
  • Predict grades for Year 13 students and communicate these grades to the students.
  • Respond to queries from University Admissions Tutors regarding predicted grades.

Apprenticeships

  • Inform students of apprenticeship opportunities and how to apply, via the 6th Form Bulletin.

6th Form Bulletin

  • Produce the weekly Highams Park 6th Form Bulletin, communicating important information to 6th Form students, liaising with the 6th Form Team and Senior Prefects for announcements.

6th Form Recruitment

  • Oversee publication of the 6th Form prospectus with the Academy Business Manager, collecting photographs and providing subject leaders examples of required pages.
  • Arrange meetings with the prospectus publisher regarding production.

Marketing

  • Arrange and attend marketing events with Year 13 prefects at local secondary schools within Waltham Forest.
  • Responsible for marketing the 6th Form through appropriate methods such as adverts in local newspapers and a banner outside the front of the school to promote the 6th Form Open Evening.
  • Deliver assemblies to Year 11 students at Highams Park School and speak with external students at other local schools.
  • Organise the 6th Form Open Evening and the 6th Form Taster Day in late June.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Administer the Post 16 Bursary Fund.
  • Undertake interviews for prospective 6th Form students outside of school hours.
  • Attend A Level Results Day and 6th Form Enrolment sessions in August.

Line Management Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the Head of Year 12 and Head of Year 13 work with the Attendance Secretary regarding Sixth Form students who are late to school, and identify students with concerning attendance.
  • Oversee the quality assurance of 6th Form tutor time, ensuring effective implementation by each Head of Year.
  • Monitor attendance and punctuality, develop and implement intervention strategies if attendance falls below 96% or multiple students are turning up late; liaise with the 6th Form Study Centre Supervisor to allocate students to 8am detention.
  • Ensure Heads of Year 12 and 13 run tutor meetings in accordance with the school calendar and have an assembly rota planned for each term.
  • Lead assemblies on a rota basis to both Year 12 and Year 13.
