This position works in our Established Pharmaceuticals Division (EPD). EPD is committed to bringing the benefits of our trusted medicines to more people in the world’s fastest‑growing countries. Our broad portfolio of high‑quality and differentiated branded generic medicines reaches across multiple therapeutic areas including gastroenterology, women’s health, cardiometabolic, pain management/central nervous system, and respiratory.

Medical Affairs Director – APAC

As the Medical Affairs Director – APAC, you will:

  • Directly support DVP APAC of Abbott’s Established Pharmaceuticals Division (EPD), to lead the strategies and goals for medico marketing activities across EPD APAC, ensuring compliance with all applicable Abbott policies and industry standards in APAC. The incumbent will provide scientific and medical liaison to the DVP of EPD APAC.
  • The result of execution of the medical strategy will support the transformation and growth of the EPD APC business. Keen knowledge of the countries in APAC with a medical affairs network in APAC is critical.
  • Leading the team of direct and indirect reports with the right culture of collaboration and mindset of growth and efficiency is a core part of the role, which includes attracting, developing and retaining the best talent and actively developing a pipeline of successor talent.
  • Working seamlessly cross functionally to prepare and execute initiatives will help shape the future of the EPD business in APAC. Additionally, working efficiently and effectively with relevant HQ partners will also be key to success.

What You’ll Do

The Medical Affairs Director ensures provision of medical and scientific expertise to the Therapeutic Areas and Brands, and strategically supports EPD global, APAC regional, and affiliate Commercial teams:

  • Build, develop and retain the medical affairs network in APAC, while actively developing a pipeline of successor talent
  • Lead the medical affairs team with the right culture and mindset to partner with the commercial team
  • Scientifically support marketing and sales teams
  • Guide on Medical Compliance in APAC
  • Provide scientific and medical expertise to all internal stakeholders
  • Guide the strategy of commercial teams with “external stakeholder insights” in APAC
  • Ensure seamless execution of medical information services: Promotional material, marketing and sales aids, brochures, websites, digital platforms, etc. review and approval process, HCP queries.
  • Develop and execute the Medical Education plan: congresses, standalone meetings, CMEs, speaker tours, etc.
  • Issues management and Q&A
  • Support the development of market shaping activities
  • New idea generation, and evaluation of new opportunities either for L&A or MAKE in each therapeutic area
  • Scientifically support portfolio expansion and business development activities in APAC.
  • Scientifically support digital strategy of APAC, and as a member of EM&Global Digital Review Board to review and approve all digital projects scientifically
  • The role is responsible for development of KOL, Academic and professional society engagement strategy for all therapeutic areas under responsibility in APAC.
  • The Medical Affairs Director develops and executes publication plans in the region with all applicable Abbott policies.

Requirements

Medical Degree (MD / MBBS or equivalent)

  • Minimum 15+ years of experience at management or senior leadership level within the healthcare or pharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated track record of success within the pharmaceutical industry; experience with similar business models is highly preferred
  • Proven experience driving strategic initiatives and leading complex, cross‑functional projects
  • Prior experience working across APAC markets, with strong understanding of regional medical affairs networks
  • Solid knowledge of medical issues, trends, and late‑stage clinical research across relevant therapeutic areas
  • Experience integrating complex, multi‑functional efforts across medical, commercial, R&D, manufacturing, and business teams
  • Strong people leadership experience, including talent development, succession planning, and team capability building
  • Strong ability to communicate, influence, and lead effectively in a matrix organization and at senior management level
  • Excellent scientific, analytical, and problem‑solving skills, combined with strong business acumen and industry knowledge
  • Ability to merge and apply knowledge from scientific, R&D, manufacturing, and commercial perspectives
  • Proven project management capability, with strong organizational, planning, and execution skills
  • High level of attention to detail and accountability for delivering high‑quality results
  • Strong data analytics and quantitative skills to support strategic decision‑making
  • Ability to work independently and meticulously, while adapting effectively to changing priorities and complex environments
  • Demonstrated capability to lead teams and drive change without direct authority (impact & influence)
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to anticipate trends, plan proactively, and shape future outcomes
