Trauma & Orthopaedics Senior Trust Doctor (ST3+ equivalent)
12 months fixed term contract, Expected start date July 2026.
Applications are invited for a Clinical Orthopaedic Fellow (at registrar level). This is an exciting opportunity to gain comprehensive experience and training in Trauma & Orthopaedics at University College Hospital.
As each of our consultants has their specific sub‑specialty interest, the candidate may be able to preference the area of their sub‑specialty interest to match that of their consultant supervisor (depending on availability), giving the fellow exposure to clinics and elective operating in that particular area.
The Fellow will be working alongside a team of sixteen consultant surgeons, who collaborate closely with musculoskeletal radiologists, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists.
The candidate must be post MRCS, have at least 36 months Orthopaedic experience and have obtained full registration with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.
Your job plan is anticipated to contain 9‑10 clinical sessions per week on average to be carried out on UCLH sites.
UCH Fellowships are clinically based specialist posts intended to give candidates hands‑on experience and a wide exposure to current techniques in trauma and orthopaedic surgery. UCLH has a busy trauma operative workload delivered on all‑day Consultant supervised trauma lists during the week, with excellent experience to be gained in routine and complex cases. You will also have the opportunity to gain exposure to our highly specialist elective workload delivered by consultants who are experts in their given specialist areas.
Ward round activities within the department are expected to be undertaken prior to the start of the programmed activities.
- Senior Trust Doctors, like all members of staff, are expected to develop professional and harmonious working relationships with all members of the nursing, professional, technical, and managerial staff with whom they have contact during the performance of their duties and to follow the Hospital’s Code of Ethics and Hospital Policies.
- To provide medical and surgical care for patients in the department while in the clinics, in theatre and on the wards.
- To meet with the respective consultants for advice and to maintain continuity of care.
- To ensure that the junior staff (SpRs, STs and RMO on‑call) are informed of all relevant issues regarding patients.
- To follow the instructions given by and always liaise with the Consultants in charge of each patient.
- The Senior Trust Doctor will work under supervision of a consultant but will be given the opportunity to undertake clinics and operating lists independently if the appropriate competencies are met.
Other Programmed Activities
Supporting activities will include clinical governance, audit, teaching, and management and will be programmed in agreement with the Clinical Director.
The job description is not intended to be exhaustive, and it is likely that duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances and after consultation with the post holder. You will be expected to actively participate in annual appraisals and set objectives in conjunction with your manager. Performance will be monitored against set objectives.
