A Consultant Doctor in Diabetes and Endocrinology is required to join the existing team of Doctors in Salford Royal Hospital, part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA).

The team consists of 9 consultants, 3 specialist trainees, junior doctors, specialist nurses and allied health professionals who provide tertiary level care for pituitary, thyroid, adrenal and other hormone‑related diseases. The department offers a large, highly progressive diabetes technology service and is the only specialist bariatric centre in the region.

Salford Royal Hospital is also one of the largest referral centres in the United Kingdom for neurosciences/pituitary surgery and a regional service for specialist endocrine surgery.

This appointment will be for a 7.5 pa’s contract and will be made on the new Consultant Doctor contract with a suitable job plan arranged in conjunction with the Clinical Director.

Main duties of the job

Consultants are responsible for specialist care in an inpatient setting and speciality outpatient clinics in acute and community locations. They provide ward‑based care for a general medical ward and other patients admitted under the team, in outlier wards. Clinicians are part of the on‑call rota, currently 1 in 8.

Roles include delivering quality improvement projects, facilitating publications, and presenting at national conferences. Opportunities for medical education include supervising and supporting all specialty medicine trainees.

Qualifications

  • Primary Medical Qualification (e.g. MBChB)
  • FRCEM, or evidence of equivalent training with significant EM experience, or MRCPCH with EM subspeciality
  • Current ALS provider
  • Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
  • Post Graduate Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc
  • ETC/ATLS provider

Professional Registration

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview (CCST or CCT in Respiratory or within six months of entitlement)
  • GIM with specialty will also be considered

Knowledge and Experience

  • Wide experience in Diabetes and Endocrine Medicine
  • Broad experience in the management of all aspects of diabetes and endocrine medicine
  • Demonstrates the underpinning subject specific competencies relevant to the role setting and scope
  • Good practical clinical skills
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance and safeguarding
  • Demonstrates key generic skills around consent, prescribing medicines safely and using medical devices safely
  • Publication of research articles demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitments
