The Emergency Department – Senior Sister / Charge Nurse

The Emergency Department Team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust has an upcoming vacancy for B7 Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to join the department, working full time on a 12 month fixed term/secondment basis. We also have a permanent position available.

The ED is a major trauma centre providing care to patients requiring a variety of services including major trauma, majors assessment and treatment area and minor injuries. The department also has an enhanced care suite dedicated to those patients experiencing a mental health crisis. The ED prides itself on delivering high quality patient-centred care in a fast paced environment.

The ED is an exciting place to work, great teamwork and multi-disciplinary working ensures that all new starters are made to feel supported and welcome. As you progress through your induction a vast array of learning opportunities are available such as triage competency, suturing, dementia champion, ALS, cannulation and venesection and trauma ILS.

Interviews will be held week commencing 8th June.

What You’ll Do

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse you will be expected to promote the delivery of a high standard of patient-centred care. With the support of the Matron you will analyse, monitor, and implement actions that ensure the service delivery is safe and effective in line with the Trust values. You will be responsible for the daily operational management and service delivery process within the department, along with the line management and development of the nursing team. You will ensure the smooth running of the department, working as a key decision maker alongside the multi professional team, leading on aspects of clinical care, and focusing on patient safety, experience, and quality assurance frameworks.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal skills and show clinical leadership experience. They will be educated to a degree level with evidence of on-going education and qualifications pertinent to this specialty. They must be able to demonstrate a compassionate approach to the care of patients and the public, whilst also possessing the ability to ensure robust clinical operational demands are met.

Qualifications, Knowledge, And Experience

Essential criteria

  • 1st Level Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC Register
  • Recognised mentorship qualification and experience as a Sign Off mentor
  • Degree or working towards
  • Completion of appropriate specialty Course
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice. Supporting a range of learners in practice; supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Extensive experience in specialty to include considerable experience at Band 6 level
  • Evidence of clinical leadership ability
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of utilising evidence in practice
  • Proven management experience

Desirable criteria

  • Management Course (or equivalent)
  • Experience as an NMC sign off mentor or clinical practice assessor
  • Evidence of staff development and succession planning
  • Experience of report writing
