Job Description:

Are you looking for an out-of-hours role where emergency medicine is properly supported and clinical decisions are trusted?

Wirral Pet 999 is the only independent, dedicated out-of-hours clinic serving the Wirral and Chester area. We exist to provide high-quality, accessible emergency care for pets and calm, local support for clients when they need it most.

This is a rare opportunity to work nights within a multi-disciplinary, RCVS-Accredited referral hospital, where emergency caseload sits alongside the ongoing care of hospitalised patients, with full referral clinician backup available.

An ECC service built around good medicine

Out-of-hours care at Wirral Pet 999 is not about restriction or gatekeeping; it’s about access.

You’ll have full use of referral-level diagnostics and equipment, including:

  • CT scanning
  • Endoscopy
  • Ultrasound
  • Extensive in-house laboratory suite
  • Drip pumps and syringe drivers
  • On-site transfusion products, with participation in the Blood Sharing Scheme

No equipment is “reserved” for referral clinicians only, and we have no off-site call centres. Our calls are handled locally, and our on-site daytime administration team supports the service, allowing clinicians to focus on medicine, not logistics.

We also take pride in accommodating home visits wherever possible, because good ECC care is as much about compassion and practicality as it is about clinical skill.

The role

Working alongside an experienced RVN, you’ll be responsible for:

  • The overnight care of an average of 5–15 hospitalised inpatients, originating from local practices and the on-site referral service
  • Assessment, triage and management of a wide range of emergency OOH cases
  • Admitting and supporting emergency referrals under clinician guidance, following a structured induction and training period

This is a role for vets who are confident managing ECC presentations independently and who value continuity, teamwork and clear clinical decision-making.

Typical case exposure includes GDV, haemoperitoneum, pleural effusion, DKA and other acute medical and surgical emergencies.

Who we’re looking for

You’ll be a confident, capable and experienced veterinary surgeon, dedicated to delivering high standards of ECC care. You’ll be comfortable working independently overnight, while also valuing collaboration with referral and daytime teams.

Strong clinical judgement, excellent record keeping and a calm, client-focused approach are essential. You’ll be keen to play an active role in the ongoing management of referral cases out of hours and to become a valued part of a close‑knit, forward‑thinking hospital team.
