An exciting opportunity has arisen for specialist optometrist posts to work at Moorfields City Road, St George’s, and Ealing. The roles cover a variety of core and sub‑specialty clinics throughout the week, including Contact Lenses, Medical Retina Injection clinics, Glaucoma, Paediatrics, and cataract.
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a post‑graduate teaching hospital of international acclaim, dedicated to excellence in patient care, training and research. The Optometry Department has over 160 optometrists and provides clinical services for refraction, low vision assessment, medical contact lenses and extended‑role activities across multiple sites.
Main Duties of the Job
Engage in specialist clinical activity that requires advanced techniques and careful clinical decision‑making. Provide specialised diagnosis, management, care and education of patients under the support of consultants.
Offer clinical opinions and seek opinions from consultant colleagues to inform the management of patients for both optometric and non‑optometric colleagues.
Job Responsibilities
- Work in an ‘extended role’ capacity in ophthalmology clinics (Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Cataract, External Disease).
- Provide extended‑role services outside ophthalmology clinics, such as in a Children’s Vision Clinic, including refraction (adult and paediatric), diagnostic and post‑operative cases.
- Fit medical contact lenses and assist in low vision clinics for both adults and paediatrics.
- Refract patients to specific protocols as part of research studies.
- Supervise junior staff in their clinical roles.
- Take responsibility for clinical decision‑making with support from consultants.
- Deliver and obtain clinical opinions to inform patient management.
Qualification
- BSc Optometry and registration.
- Specialist College of Optometrists Professional Certificate Qualifications (1).
- Specialist College of Optometrists Higher Qualifications.
- Specialist College of Optometrists Diploma in Independent Prescribing.
- MSc in Optometry/Ophthalmology.
Experience
- Post‑qualification Hospital experience >3 years.
- Experience examining vulnerable groups of patients (e.g. CYP / additional needs).
- Hospital extended‑role experience.
- Community shared‑care experience.
- Experience with clinical teaching.
- Experience in audit/research.
- Experience dealing with quality and safety issues (complaints, incidents, risk assessment).
Knowledge & Skills
- Competent use of a slit‑lamp to examine the anterior and posterior eye with specialist lenses.
- Competent performance of retinoscopy.
- Ability to analyse and interpret ocular imaging (OCT, visual fields, topography) at an advanced clinical level.
- Ability to use Electronic Patient Record systems.
- Excellent written communication skills including the ability to write clinical summaries, referral letters, reports and papers.
- Ability to identify service improvement needs.
- Ability to communicate complex information sensitively in a range of situations (e.g. clinical information to patients, delivering unwelcome & bad news).

Contract & Working Pattern
Permanent – Full‑time or Part‑time.
Salary
£58,133 to £65,261 a year, inclusive of HCAS, pro rata if part‑time.
