Role Overview

The Director of Technical Operations leads the end-to-end technical delivery of sports productions across studio, remote and outside broadcast environments. This senior leadership role combines strategic direction with operational oversight, ensuring high-quality, reliable and scalable delivery across broadcast, digital and emerging platforms.

With a deep understanding of evolving technologies, workflows and industry innovation, the role is central to driving technical advancement, championing new production solutions and supporting business growth in an increasingly dynamic media landscape.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery and Live Operations

  • Lead technical delivery across all productions, including live sports and outside broadcasts.
  • Ensure high-quality output across linear, digital and streaming platforms.
  • Oversee signal workflows, transmission and technical quality control.
  • Act as senior escalation point during live broadcasts.
  • Ensure robust contingency and disaster recovery planning.

Technical Strategy and Innovation

  • Define and deliver technical strategy aligned to business objectives.
  • Oversee infrastructure across OB, remote and cloud-based production.
  • Identify & implement new technologies to improve capability, efficiency and output quality.
  • Lead long-term technical projects, including system design, supplier selection and implementation.

New Business & Commercial Support

  • Develop technical solutions for bids, RFPs and client proposals.
  • Provide expert input on production planning and technical approaches.
  • Support pitches and supplier specification processes.

Leadership & Resourcing

  • Lead and develop technical teams and freelance networks.
  • Set clear standards of delivery, collaboration and performance.
  • Oversee crewing strategies and support talent development.

Operational & Commercial Oversight

  • Ensure efficient day-to-day technical operations and workflows.
  • Monitor performance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage budgets, equipment and supplier relationships.
  • Deliver cost-effective solutions without compromising quality.

Compliance and Risk

  • Ensure compliance with broadcast, regulatory and client requirements.
  • Maintain high health and safety standards across all environments.
  • Manage technical risk and oversee post-event reviews.

Person Specification

Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in senior technical or broadcast operations roles within live sports production.
  • Strong track record across outside broadcast and production delivery models, including scaling between premium broadcast and high-volume digital production.
  • Proven ability to deliver complex, multi-site or multi-event productions at scale.
  • Deep understanding of production workflows, including OB, remote and digital production, signal paths/transmission, and core broadcast systems.
  • Strong awareness of emerging technologies, with the ability to drive innovation and improve workflows and efficiency.
  • Creative, solutions-focused approach, working closely with editorial and production teams to enhance live sports coverage and audience engagement.
  • Strong leadership capability, with experience building and managing high-performing teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills in live, time-critical environments.
  • Ability to operate strategically and operationally.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
