Dental Officer

Overview

Provide high‑quality routine, urgent and specialist dental care to BTH Dental Services, including special care and paediatric dentistry, inhalation sedation, domiciliary care, exodontia and comprehensive care under general anaesthetic. All work will be performed in accordance with NHS regulations, Trust policies, NICE guidance and the Delivering Better Oral Health (DBOH) framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive treatment: assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative and preventive care for routine and urgent patients.
  • Provide urgent care for patients referred by the Lancashire Call Handling Service and through the service’s emergency pathway.
  • Administer inhalation sedation and conscious sedation where appropriate, ensuring safe pain and anxiety control.
  • Perform exodontia and other procedures under general anaesthetic, supporting Senior Dental Officers and Specialists.
  • Offer domiciliary dental care to house‑bound patients meeting criteria, managing complex medical co‑morbidities and coordinating with allied health professionals.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records, complete Case Mix and performance statistics, and contribute to clinical audit and continuous improvement programmes.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control, safeguarding, confidentiality, health‑safety and legal obligations.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families and multidisciplinary teams, and participate in patient experience and engagement initiatives.
  • Undertake mandatory and voluntary CPD, attend induction, appraisal, supervision and clinical governance activities.
  • Support training for dental therapy students and other BTH staff as required and contribute to in‑house CPD delivery.
  • Adhere to the Trust’s disability and equality policies, promoting inclusive care and equal opportunities.

Person Specification

Clinical

  • BDS with current GDC registration.
  • Membership of Royal College (MFDS or equivalent).

Experience

  • Foundation training or equivalent.
  • Experience of DCT/Further Training in Special Care Dentistry.
  • Experience of DCT/Further Training in Paediatric Dentistry.

Professional

  • Evidence of commitment to NHS dentistry.
  • Participation in peer review, clinical audit, clinical governance and CPD activities.
