About the role
We are seeking an appropriately qualified, experienced and committed individual to join the Student Access and Support Leadership Team, providing strategic leadership for safeguarding, student wellbeing developments and associated risk management across the University.
The role is responsible for ensuring that safeguarding arrangements, wellbeing frameworks and related institutional processes are effective, compliant with regulatory provisions and responsive to diverse student need.
The role leads the development of the University’s student wellbeing strategy and works across academic schools, professional services, the Students’ Union and external partners to strengthen student wellbeing and pastoral support.
As Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, the postholder provides oversight of complex and high-risk casework, leads institutional responses to significant student wellbeing concerns, and coordinates multi-agency interventions both within and outside the University.
The role provides direct leadership for teams providing student health promotion, safeguarding and student wellbeing communications.
About you
You will have a professional qualification in a relevant discipline, with significant experience of working with a diverse student population and managing wellbeing service provision within an educational context. You will also have substantial management experience at an appropriate level, including recruiting, developing, training, appraising and motivating staff.
With an excellent understanding of the legislative framework relating to mental health and other disabilities in a higher education context, you will have significant experience of leading and overseeing complex, high risk safeguarding, wellbeing, welfare or related casework, including risk assessment, decision making and managing multi-agency interventions to protect vulnerable individuals. You will also have experience of managing response to critical incidents.
You will have strong leadership capabilities, with the ability to manage and influence within a distributed multi-agency setting. You will also have proven ability to lead policy development in safeguarding and wellbeing contexts, strong networking skills and the ability to build positive relationships with colleagues across the institution and externally with partner agencies.
This is a permanent, full-time post of 36.25 hours per week. This role is based on University Park campus and will be offered on a hybrid working basis. Typically, you will be expected to work at least three days per week on campus. However, you will be required to work flexibly as the role demands and be on site when necessary. You will also be expected work out of hours on occasion.
