Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is collaborating with Yorkshire Cancer Research and Sheffield Hallam University to implement the Active Together model for people diagnosed with cancer. The Active Together programme will run alongside existing diagnostic and treatment pathways to ensure patients are optimally prepared for treatment and beyond. It aims to maximise resilience, improve long‑term health, minimise side effects and empower patients to be partners in their healthcare.
The programme combines physical activity, nutritional support, and psychological support alongside the clinical pathway. This 5‑year funded programme will be staged into relevant cancer pathways, with patients receiving individual assessments and being triaged to an appropriate support pathway.
Role Overview
The overall purpose of this role is to lead, establish, deliver and sustain the success of the psychological element of the Active Together Programme. The Psychologist will ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of the psychological service, delivering evidence‑based practice, improving patient outcomes, and developing services within the Trust.
Main Duties
- Provide a high‑quality, specialist psychological service to cancer patients as part of the programme, devising and implementing assessments and interventions for patients presenting with complex difficulties related to diagnosis and treatment.
- Implement a range of specialist psychological therapies for individuals, families and groups.
- Undertake risk assessment and risk management for clients, and provide specialist advice to other professionals.
- Provide information, advice, support and supervision to non‑mental health colleagues within the programme.
- Supervise and support psychological practice through consultation, supervision, formulation and training.
- Work autonomously within professional practice guidelines, ensuring systematic governance of clinical practice.
- Receive supervision and guidance from a senior clinical psychologist in the department.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Post‑graduate doctoral training in clinical psychology accredited by the BPS.
- Registered Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council.
- Post‑doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
- Trained in supervising psychology trainees.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Post‑doctoral training in clinical health psychology.
Knowledge, Training & Experience
- Experience working clinically with individuals in a health setting.
- Experience supporting multidisciplinary teams in healthcare, social services or related fields.
- Skills in complex psychological assessment and intervention methods (e.g., CBT, ACT, CFT).
- Experience in teaching, training and clinical supervision.
- Evidence‑based practice relevant to the role.
- Experience in an acute hospital trust.
- Experience working with oncology patients.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- Highly developed knowledge of psychology theory and practice.
- Doctoral knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex and multivariate data analysis.
- Knowledge of risk assessment and risk management.
- Knowledge of national directives and strategies shaping cancer services.
- High level knowledge of at least two specialised psychological therapies.
- Skill in providing consultation to professional and non‑professional groups.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and its implications for clinical practice.

- Ability to work flexibly within a multidisciplinary context and in an acute healthcare environment.
- Previous NHS experience.
