Senior Pre-Construction Project Engineer

Join Galliford Try as a Senior Pre-Construction Engineer and play a key role within our Engineering Design Management Team. You will support design activities across our business unit, primarily within the Thames Water AMP7 and AMP8 frameworks, with opportunities to contribute to projects across the UK. In this role, you will collaborate with Design Managers, Project Managers, and Commercial colleagues to help manage designer consultants, ensuring that design solutions meet project requirements, budget, and programme timelines. Your work will uphold our commitment to technical excellence, risk management and the highest standards of safety, health and environmental performance.
What you will be doing
- Provide guidance and support to Pre-Construction Engineers at various levels.
- Build strong working relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- Apply CDM 2015 principles, promoting safety in design as the Principal Designer.
- Coordinate and oversee multidisciplinary design activities.
- Work in line with Galliford Try’s policies and procedures.
- Support commercial and programme alignment within design appointments.
- Ensure clarity and understanding of the design scope.
- Lead design meetings and ensure accurate documentation and distribution of minutes.
- Manage the delivery of design documentation in accordance with submission schedules.
- Understand target cost allowances and collaborate with commercial teams to manage budgets effectively.
- Identify required design approvals and manage information flow across clients, internal teams, and subcontractors.
- Promote best practice including BIM/Digital solutions, DfMA, standardisation, carbon reduction, and supply chain engagement.
- Work closely with delivery teams to champion integrated project delivery.
- Support the Project Team by contributing to value engineering, buildability reviews, and integrated project programmes.
- Support the Framework Design Manager with implementing design management strategy, reporting performance, and managing design change control.
About You
- Degree in Engineering/Design/Architecture, Design or Construction Management
- Experience in a Design Management role within the Construction Industry and/or Infrastructure & Environment Industries (highways, rail, water or aviation).
- Good people management skills with a focus on development and support.
- Lead the design management process.
- Experience in 2D-3D environment (appreciate BIM approach).
- Technically competent with solid commercial and contractual awareness.
- Strong understanding of CDM 2015 responsibilities.
- Aware of individual Health and Safety responsibilities and adheres to company health and safety policy and procedures.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Able read and interpret design and construction programmes.
- Highly organised, deadline-driven, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient IT and computer skills.
- Professional qualification (desirable).
