Role Overview

We are recruiting for a permanent role as a Mechanical Project Engineer/Manager in Plymouth.

Key Information

  • Salary: Up to £60,000 + company vehicle/car allowance
  • Holidays: 28 days (inclusive of Bank Holidays)

Role Purpose

Lead the end‑to‑end delivery of mechanical engineering projects valued from £1k to £300k, ensuring successful execution from initial planning through to completion. Manage all contractual aspects, proactively mitigate risks and drive project performance to meet deadlines, quality standards and budget targets while maintaining full compliance with internal policies and external regulations.

Working Conditions

Full‑time position, Monday to Friday (8‑5 pm), with occasional requirement for overtime, weekend work or emergency shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, negotiate and manage contracts related to mechanical engineering projects.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and company standards.
  • Identify and mitigate contractual risks.
  • Monitor contract performance and enforce terms and conditions.
  • Work on a variety of projects within short periods of time.
  • Procure relevant plant, materials and sub‑contractor packages.
  • Analyse labour resource requirements and control labour and associated costs.
  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor works progress and ensure quality standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering, procurement and project management teams to align contract terms with project goals.
  • Track project milestones and deliverables in accordance with contractual obligations.
  • Collate certification and prepare operation & maintenance manuals.
  • Support budgeting and cost control efforts.
  • Manage claims, variations and change orders.
  • Provide ad‑hoc site support, supervise small projects, manage RAMS, labour control and occasional hands‑on installation.
  • Prepare, submit, authorise and monitor risk assessments and method statements.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments and toolbox talks.
  • Address any potential safety issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and provide training on safety procedures.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for contractual matters with clients, vendors and subcontractors.
  • Evaluate customer needs and respond to them.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management.
  • Attend project group and technical meetings.
  • Provide updates on project timelines, resource needs and staffing requirements.
  • Implement initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce waste and enhance service quality.
  • Encourage innovation and problem‑solving within the team.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Relevant qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience in contract management within an engineering or construction environment.
  • Excellent project management skills, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical engineering health and safety protocols and industry‑standard quality assurance practices.
  • Detail‑focused with a proven ability to deliver to the highest compliance and technical standards.
  • Working knowledge of contract management software, CAD and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities, fostering strong collaborative relationships with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS certification.
  • CSCS Card – managerial / professionally qualified.
  • Self‑motivated.
