Clinical Psychologist

Exciting opportunity to work with children and young people in the paediatric oncology service at the Great North Children’s Hospital. This role is part of the Psychology in Healthcare Service, which provides psychological support to adult, children and neuropsychology patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a specialist clinical psychology service to the paediatric oncology service, including in‑patients and out‑patients, with specialist assessments, formulation and therapy.
  • Offer advice and consultation on patient psychological care to multidisciplinary colleagues and non‑professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines.
  • Utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the team.
  • Prepare and present MDT meetings, effectively communicate complex and sensitive information to referrers, patients and professional colleagues.
  • Support the development of newly qualified and more experienced psychologists through post‑grad training, CPD and supervision.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, and teaching of professional groups and trainees.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society, with training in models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Registered with HCPC (or eligible for registration at appointment).

Desirable

  • Training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or applied psychology.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of specialist assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across a full range of care settings (out‑patient, community, primary care, in‑patient).
  • Experience working with a diverse range of client groups across the life course with varying clinical severity.

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
  • Experience applying clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Knowledge of national good practice for clinical psychologists in health services.
  • Advanced skills in complex psychological assessment, intervention and management.
  • Strong communication skills – able to empathise, convey complex technical information orally and in writing to clients, families, carers and professional colleagues.
  • Able to provide consultation to professional and non‑professional groups.
  • Doctorate‑level knowledge of research methodology and multivariate data analysis.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of specialised therapies for difficult to treat groups (e.g., personality disorder, dual diagnosis, additional disabilities).
  • High level knowledge of at least two specialised psychological therapies.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation concerning clients and mental health.

Other Requirements

Essential

  • Ability to teach and train others using a range of complex multimedia materials.
  • Ability to implement mechanisms of clinical governance to maintain practice amid exposure to emotive material and challenging behaviour.
  • Computer literate – competent use of e‑mail and internet.

Desirable

  • Experience working within a multicultural framework.
  • Car driver.
