Public Law Department
Experienced in civil liberties, judicial review, immigration, asylum, and public law matters against HMRC, local authorities, NHS, and other bodies. The department takes cases to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, achieving high success rates and setting legal precedents.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Report directly to the Department Director
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to team members across all aspects of Public Law work
- Manage and supervise Solicitors, Trainee Solicitors and Caseworkers, ensuring appropriate caseload allocation
- Assist with training and development within the department
- Handle a wide range of Public Law matters including unlawful detention, false imprisonment, abuse by detention staff, conditions in detention, age assessments, asylum support, non-appealable decisions, removal notices, NHS & local authority challenges, policies and decisions of the Immigration and Asylum Tribunals, bail decisions, data protection, housing, and other non-immigration public law issues
- Prepare and manage funding applications to the Legal Aid Agency
- Draft witness statements, evidence, and application forms including index of documents and letters of representation
- Attend conferences and court appearances
- Maintain a professional, pro‑active approach, strong client care skills, and contribute to business development and marketing
Key Skills and Qualifications
- Clean, valid practising certificate at the time of application
- Law Society Immigration Accreditation Level 2 (supervisor accreditation not required but desirable)
- Strong management skills with a proven team‑player attitude
- Proven solicitor experience working to key performance indicators
- Excellent client‑care skills, sensitivity when dealing with vulnerable clients and complex public law matters
- Networking and communication skills with ability to market the firm and generate new business
- Working knowledge of Legal Aid Guidance for Public Law matters and ability to service privately funded cases
- Extensive experience in all areas of Public Law
- Advocacy experience an advantage
- IT proficiency – Microsoft Office and document management systems
