Job Description

We offer self-employed positions with flexible hours, allowing candidates to work part-time or full-time in Portsmouth. Candidates must have a reasonable commute from Portsmouth or be willing to travel nationally.

The role offers earnings on a pro‑rate basis, dependent on the rate per appliance, the number of tests, and the nature of the job. Projects range from one‑day assignments to long‑term contracts, and details are discussed at the time of booking.

Strong requirements include a City & Guilds 2377 PAT qualification or equivalent, reliability, honesty, a ‘can‑do’ attitude, and the ability to keep all testing instruments, measuring devices and tools up-to-date, in good working order, and compliant with relevant regulations.

A Typical Day

As a PAT engineer, each day is varied. You start by packing all necessary tools – testers, record books, and van equipment – and head to the first job site. On site, you perform testing on appliances such as microwaves, kettles, and computers, using appropriate instruments to determine safety or need for repair.

You inform users of the results, record findings in a dedicated PAT test report book or an electronic system, and provide employers with copies. Additional paperwork, like completion certificates and checklists, may be required. Throughout the day, you move between locations, alone or with a team, ensuring accurate and efficient completion of all tests.

Pat testing is physically and mentally demanding but rewarding. It offers variety and opportunities for advancement in a career focused on workplace safety.
