Overview

Drive operational excellence in a fast‑paced warehouse environment with a global print media distributor. Lead a high-performing team, oversee UK and EU logistics operations, and play a key role in shaping future improvements and growth. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and commercially minded Head of Operations to take ownership of a busy warehouse and logistics operation. You will lead day‑to‑day activities across warehouse, transport and EU third‑party logistics operations while driving continuous improvement initiatives that support business growth and customer satisfaction. The successful candidate must be comfortable managing a physical, high‑throughput operation involving specialist handling processes and complex logistics requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all warehouse operations including goods‑in, picking, packing, despatch and transport coordination
  • Manage inbound shipping container schedules, unloading and stock put‑away activities
  • Ensure customer orders are fulfilled accurately and delivered on time
  • Coordinate outbound deliveries using company vehicles, couriers and pallet networks
  • Manage the safe handling, storage and movement of large, bulky and specialist products including grand format rolls
  • Ensure appropriate material handling equipment and racking systems are maintained and used correctly
  • Monitor operational KPIs including accuracy, turnaround times and service performance
  • Oversee relationships and service levels with EU third‑party logistics providers in France and Italy
  • Conduct regular visits to EU warehouse sites to support process improvements and training
  • Lead, motivate and develop a warehouse team of 10 to 15 employees
  • Maintain high standards of communication, team performance and employee engagement
  • Support and reinforce health and safety compliance across all warehouse operations
  • Identify operational inefficiencies and develop improvement recommendations for senior management
  • Produce operational reports covering throughput, stock accuracy and team performance
  • Support implementation of agreed operational improvements and best practice initiatives

Qualifications

  • Proven experience managing a fast‑paced warehouse or distribution operation, ideally within a product distribution or trade supply environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of 10+ people directly
  • Strong understanding of end‑to‑end warehouse processes: inbound, storage, picking, packing, despatch and transport
  • Experience managing high volume order fulfilment in a time‑pressured environment
  • Working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and warehouse compliance requirements
  • Ability to quickly establish authority and credibility with an established team
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to make confident decisions under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills – able to work with both a warehouse team and senior management
  • Proficient with warehouse management systems and basic office tools (Excel, email)

Desirable

  • Familiarity with container‑based inbound freight schedules and import logistics workflows
  • Experience managing mixed outbound transport models (own fleet, couriers, pallet networks)
  • Experience handling large, heavy or oversized products requiring specialist MHE and racking solutions
  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent H&S qualification
  • Experience preparing and presenting operational improvement proposals to senior stakeholders
  • Forklift licence (counterbalance and/or reach)
  • Experience with overseas warehouse management/implementation

Compensation, Employment type and Benefits

  • £50,000 – £65,000 per year dependent on experience
  • Full Time, Permanent
  • Monday to Friday Office‑based position
  • Must have own transport
