Junior Sister/Charge Nurse – Emergency Department

Are you an experienced nurse with considerable emergency or acute care experience, with current NMC registration, who is ready to step up to a Band 6 role? An opportunity has arisen for Band 6 Sisters/Charge Nurses within the Emergency Department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
We are a Major Trauma Centre, receiving patients from throughout Surrey and Sussex. All nurses will have the opportunity to rotate amongst the different areas of the department, including the Resus and the Urgent Treatment Centre. We are committed to the delivery of quality care in an unpredictable environment. We encourage innovation and participation in the development of new ways of working through multidisciplinary collaboration to achieve patient‑focused outcomes.
There are many opportunities for in‑house training on emergency skills such as furthering your venepuncture and cannulation skills with ultrasound‑guided vascular access training, plastering and catheterisation.
Experience of all aspects of emergency nursing is essential for this post along with Manchester triage system or equivalent proficiency.
This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role‑specific criteria.
Main duties of the job
- To ensure optimum standards of care for all patients attending the A&E Department.
- To undertake assessment of individual patients through a system of prioritisation of need and continuous assessment under supervision.
- To undertake planning, implementation, evaluation and re‑evaluation of individual programmes of care, taking into account the patient’s dignity, religious and cultural needs.
- To develop into expanded roles of plastering, wound closure, suturing, ultrasound‑guided vascular access, defibrillation and maintain competency in these roles.
- To ensure that the delivery of all nursing care complies with departmental, NMC and Trust policies, protocols, procedures and guidelines.
- To regularly handle heavy patients/objects, adhering to Trust Moving and Handling Policy.

Professional registration
- Registered nurse with extensive experience in acute care.
- Practice assessor or mentorship module completion.
- NMC registration
Experience and Qualifications
- Aware of Trust position and current emergency quality indicators
- Basic admin duties – phone, photocopying and computer data.
- Team leadership experience. Knowledge of appraisal process.
- Completion or near completion of the ECA level 1 competencies
