A Typical Day of a Portable Appliance Testing Engineer
As a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) engineer, no two days are the same. You’ll work in a variety of locations – hospitals, retail outlets, offices, etc.
A typical day starts with packing all necessary tools and equipment—testers and record books—into the van before heading to the first job.
On site, you test appliances such as microwaves, kettles and computers. You use test instruments to ensure electrical items are safe or need replacement or repair, inform users of results, and explain why certain appliances may be unfit for use.
After testing, you record findings in a PAT test report book or electronic system and provide employers with copies. You may also need to fill out completion certificates and checklists.
Throughout the day, you remain on the move from one location to another—either alone or as part of a team—so organization and accuracy are essential.
Success requires skill, experience and patience. Rewards are great; you help keep workplaces safe and develop your knowledge and expertise.
Overall, PAT testing is a physically and mentally demanding career that offers variety and advancement opportunities. If you’re looking for a challenge, this could be the perfect role!
