Occupational Health Nurse Advisor

The Occupational Health service works to “promote good health, safety and welfare in work – collaboratively facilitating the right support, at the right time in the right way”.

The post holder is responsible for providing comprehensive and objective occupational health advice to CTM UHB and CAVUHB employees and other external contractors. The post holder will exercise considerable initiative, work autonomously, establish relationships with service users and agencies, and will be a key player in the rapidly evolving occupational health service in line with current occupational health initiatives.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical advice and practice based on the specialist knowledge and skills of Occupational Health nursing.
  • Undertake health assessments for all potential employees in accordance with Department of Health guidelines and Occupational Health policy, with particular reference to exposure prone procedures.
  • Identify, plan and maintain the administration of vaccine and immunisation regimes relevant to the occupation, as per local guidelines and policy.
  • Undertake and manage own caseload of managerial referrals in accordance with Occupational Health policies.
  • Work in compliance with government legislation, trust policy and agreed Occupational Health protocols regarding the implementation of health and safety at work.
  • Advise employees and managers on the management of infectious episodes, illnesses and accidents and assess individual care needs with regard to treatment and/or referrals; facilitate liaison with other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Conduct health surveillance as required by government legislation and UHB policy.
  • Give advice and support to clients required to travel for work purposes regarding vaccination and chemoprophylaxis requirements.
  • Participate in the induction and training of new employees.
  • Undertake workplace visits for risk assessments and regular audit.

Job responsibilities

  • Take charge of the department’s clinical area(s) as required in the absence of a more senior member of staff.
  • Recognise appropriate skill mix, staffing levels and staff competency, in order to sustain the defined clinical areas.
  • Maintain effective and efficient communication with the Band 7 Occupational Health Nurse Advisor and other MDT members regarding department progress and difficulties.
  • Act in accordance with legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice, and all Trust policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with other Occupational Health departments, community services and agencies.
  • Participate in regular audits undertaken in the Occupational Health department and present audit results.
  • Comply with departmental arrangements and Trust policy on ordering, storage, checking, recording and administration of medicines.
  • Participate in Occupational Health departmental meetings and represent the Occupational Health service as required.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Case management sickness absence advice to management.
  • Assessment of health risks in the workplace.
  • Advice to management regarding COSHH issues.
  • Previous experience working in an NHS Occupational Health Department.

Abilities

  • Welsh language speaking/listening skills at Level 3 or above.

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Registered General Nurse (Part 1 NMC register).
  • Degree in Nursing.
  • Post basic occupational health qualification (Diploma/Degree).
  • Evidence of professional development and willingness to acquire further qualifications relevant to occupational health.
  • Knowledge of organisational policies and procedures.
  • Professional awareness and ongoing professional development.
  • Proven occupational health knowledge.
  • Basic knowledge of ergonomics.
  • RSCPHN(OH) – Part 3 NMC register.
  • NEBOSH certificate.
  • Member of specialist interest groups and networks locally and nationally.

Salary: £40,559 to £48,841 a year pro rata.
