Overview

We are working with a Tier 1 contractor based near Reading to recruit a Design Manager to join the team. The company is a national brand with an excellent reputation that maintains long term relationships with clients, subcontractors and the wider supply chain, and has a forward‑thinking approach to staff engagement. Scope and Projects

The regional office is based near Reading but covers the M4 Corridor Reading and Oxford. Target markets include education, public sector, leisure and commercial. Projects include new build NHS and student schemes in Oxford, SEN schools, Life Sciences schemes, office and local authority developments ranging from £25 to £90 million on JCT and NEC contracts, with secured turnover for 2025/26 and nearly secured for 2027/28.

Key Responsibilities

  • Early involvement at tender and bid stage, working with estimating and commercial teams to conduct forensic investigations, develop key packages, identify opportunities and potential issues, conduct VE exercises, and create detailed input for tender and bid packages.
  • Responsibility for information flow between client, consultants, subcontractors and internal teams, and lead on framework schemes.
  • From tender and bid through 2nd stage works, contract award to construction and site delivery, including management and implementation of design, working with the project manager and site delivery teams, managing RFI, change process, CDM regulations, handover and commissioning.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a Design Manager with a tier‑1 or larger regional contractor on schemes above £10 million.
  • Experience with D&B projects and framework negotiations.
  • Excellent work practices, attention to detail, organisational skills, and the ability to identify opportunities and issues.
