Locum Consultant Clinical Oncologist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Locum Consultant Clinical Oncologist to join the Oncology team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be caring for patients with Urology malignancies.
The post will be mainly based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, with an outpatient clinic in the Alexandra Hospital which is one of our peripheral hospital sites.
Main duties will include:
- Provision of a comprehensive oncology service, including new patient and follow up clinics at Worcester and one of our peripheral sites.
- Provision of emergency cover, including ward rounds on rotational basis (currently one inten weeks)
- Support cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave on a shared basis.
- Contribution to the continuous development of our service.
- Undertaking teaching/training activities to meet continuous professional development standards and support the best environment to our trainees (formal and informal).
- Participating in audits and actively contributing to matters concerning clinical governance.
- Taking on a leadership role within the department, our organisation or wider NHS structures to contribute to delivering best outcomes and experience to our patients.

Job responsibilities
- The post-holder will attend cross county & cross site meetings.
- Tocollaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.
- The post-holder will develop close collaborative links with Clinicians working in his/her area of specialist expertise and work to develop services to patients in these areas to the highest standard, according to departmental protocols and Trust guidance. To include development of diagnostic and where appropriate therapeutic protocols and guidelines, where appropriate this will involve active participation with Primary Care colleagues.
- The post-holder will participate in the Trust’s annual appraisal as described by DOH and leading to revalidation and job planning process.
- The post-holder will seek approval for any absence from the Trust such as annual leave, professional leave, study leave & other leave and make available this record at your job plan review.
- The post-holder will participate in the on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post.
- The Trust would expect a consultant whilst undertaking on-call duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The consultant on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.
- The post-holder, whilst undertaking weekend on call duties, will attend the hospital to undertake patient reviews.
- Consultants will provide cross cover for periods of annual and study leave.
- To facilitate effective quality assurance and audit and to ensure that services comply with national standards and guidance.
- The post-holder will take part in departmental and multi-disciplinary audit programmes in addition to undertaking individual audit. Participation is required in the Departmental Clinical Governance Programme.
- The post-holder will participate in regular clinical meetings, post-graduate activities and maintain continuing medical education in accordance with the requirements of the relevant Royal College and General Medical Council. The Post-holder will ensure their own practice is up to date and they support the principles of revalidation by the GMC.
- Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers.
- Comply with all relevant Trust policies and procedures.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise.
- Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent.
- Entry on Specialist Register in Oncology (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date).
Management and Administrative Experience
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service.
- Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities.
- Ability to manage and lead the Oncology firm and multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit.
- Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate.
- Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.
Teaching Experience
- Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines.
- Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research.

Other Requirements
- An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
- Able to meet the travel requirements of the job and return to the hospital within 30 minutes when on call.
Experience
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Oncology.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
- Expertise in subspecialty.
Research Experience
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives.
- Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years.
- Evidence of having undertaken original research.
