Locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry

The University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is inviting applications for a 4PA Locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry for a fixed 12‑month term. The position is based at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals in London and will be available on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Job overview

The successful candidate will join an established team providing a full range of paediatric dental services, postgraduate training and research. Responsibilities will include diagnosis and treatment planning, treatment under general anaesthetic and sedation, supervision of trainees and postgraduate students, and involvement in multidisciplinary clinics. The role will also support remote advice clinics when required.

Main duties of the job

  • Diagnose and plan treatment for paediatric patients, including complex cases under general anaesthetic and sedation.
  • Supervise trainees and postgraduate students within the Paediatric Dental Department.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinics (hypodontia, ortho‑paeds, anomalies, oral medicine) and remote advice clinics.
  • Carry out mandatory training in line with Trust and Division requirements.
  • Maintain accurate electronic patient records and contribute to service innovation and quality improvement.
  • Take responsibility for infection prevention and control and patient safety.

Requirements

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).
  • On the GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry.
  • Membership in Paediatric Dentistry, or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Paediatric Dentistry.
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination (ISFE) in Paediatric Dentistry before commencing the consultant post.
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.

Experience

  • All aspects of paediatric dentistry care with emphasis on severe and complex problems.
  • Management of patients with multidisciplinary problems and coordination of care with other disciplines.
  • Experience with a wide range of orthodontic techniques and materials.
  • Experience of innovative treatments and managing advanced needs in paediatric dentistry.
  • Successful completion of a SAC‑approved 3‑year minimum training programme in Paediatric Dentistry.

Audit

  • Active participation in audit and clinical governance.
  • Audit supervision of others and leadership of audit programmes.
  • Evidence of innovative service developments and care pathways.

Management

  • Minimum of 2 years additional training post‑CCST in a SAC‑approved training programme or equivalent.
  • Understanding of NHS healthcare delivery and policies.
  • Experience of working with and managing teams and liaising with colleagues.
  • Knowledge of NHS policies and procedures.
  • Contribution to management of healthcare delivery at a departmental level.

Research

  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically.
  • Application of evidence‑based practice to clinical care.
  • Publications in refereed journals.
  • Research relevant to Paediatric Dentistry.
  • Possession of an MSc or equivalent qualification.

Teaching skill & experience

  • Experience of chairside clinical teaching and training of postgraduates and junior staff.
  • Experience of lectures, presentations and formal teaching to a variety of clinical groups.
  • Commitment to training and CPD.
  • Completion of a teaching or training course.
