Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine
Applications are invited to join our forward‑thinking, friendly department in Critical Care, with the option of an associated specialty at Mid‑Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital in the leafy Cheshire countryside near Crewe and Nantwich.
Full registration with the GMC and a Licence to Practise is required. The applicant must also be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training.
Main duties of the job
The post’s emphasis for clinical work will be on Adult Critical Care, with the option for additional sessions in an associated specialty. The new Consultant will join the existing team of Consultants providing clinical cover for the Critical Care Unit.
The unit is 18‑bedded, with isolation rooms and a cohort area for isolation patients.

Qualifications
- Full Registration with the GMC and a Licence to Practise.
- CCT (or equivalent) with entry on Specialist Registers for Intensive Care Medicine and the Associated Specialty or within six months of anticipated CCT date.
- Minimum of 1 year NHS service for substantive Consultant appointments.
- Valid Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider certification.
- APLS.
- ATLS.
- Dual CCT in allied specialty (e.g. Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Medical Specialty).
- Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM) or equivalent (e.g. EDIC).
- FUSIC (or equivalent) accreditation.
Experience
- Clinical training and experience in Intensive Care Medicine to the standard required for gaining a UK CCT in critical care medicine.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of critically ill patients.
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a broad range of emergency and elective presentations.
- Competence in the range of procedures expected of a UK Critical Care Consultant, including advanced airway management, bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, vascular access procedures.
- Clinical experience in relevant allied specialties.
- Demonstrable experience in a subspecialty area (e.g. commitment to Specialist Palliative Care Medicine).
Leadership, Governance, and Continuous Improvement
- Evidence of active participation in clinical audit and governance.
- Experience of leading or contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Understanding of clinical risk management and patient safety principles.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and contribute to service delivery.
- Evidence of leading service development or change management initiatives.
- Formal training or experience in leadership or management.
Research and Scholarship
- Awareness of the importance of clinical research and evidence-based practice.
- NIHR Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
- Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Presentations at regional, national, or international meetings.
- Involvement in research leadership roles (e.g. Principal Investigator, Associate PI).
Teaching and Training
- Evidence of regular involvement in teaching and training of medical and/or multidisciplinary staff.
- Ability to supervise and support doctors in training.
- Accreditation as a Clinical and/or Educational Supervisor.
- Experience in undergraduate or postgraduate medical education.
- Instructor status for life support courses.
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education (e.g. PGCert).
