Avon and Somerset Police are offering a rare opportunity to join our Coroner’s Office team as a Coroner’s Officer.
Working within a small, experienced and supportive team, you will play a vital role in investigating sudden, unexplained and unnatural deaths across the Avon Coroner’s area, helping ensure families receive answers and the Coroner has the information needed to make informed decisions.
The Role
Based at Flax Bourton Coroner’s Court, you will work closely with HM Coroner, police officers, pathologists, medical professionals and bereaved families to investigate deaths that fall within the Coroner’s jurisdiction.
This is a unique and meaningful role combining investigation, administration, safeguarding and family liaison responsibilities.
You will gather evidence, establish circumstances surrounding deaths and coordinate key elements of the coronial process with professionalism, sensitivity and attention to detail.
No two cases are the same and your work will directly contribute to supporting families through incredibly difficult circumstances while ensuring deaths are investigated thoroughly, respectfully and lawfully.
This is a role for someone who can balance compassion with professionalism and remain calm and methodical in emotionally challenging situations.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Coroners Officer, your responsibilities will include:
- Receiving reports of sudden, unexplained or unnatural deaths
- Liaising closely with HM Coroner and police investigators
- Gathering evidence and relevant information to support coronial investigations
- Obtaining witness statements from family members, friends and professionals
- Establishing medical history and liaising with GPs and healthcare providers
- Coordinating mortuary arrangements and post-mortem processes
- Managing and recording deceased property and exhibits
- Supporting urgent organ donation and transplant enquiries where required
- Assisting with investigations involving suspicious or unexpected circumstances
- Providing professional and compassionate communication with grieving families throughout the process
Your work will play a critical role in helping establish facts, support bereaved families and uphold public confidence in the coronial process.

You should also have:
- Experience working within an investigative environment
- Experience dealing with deaths, inquests or post-mortems
- Knowledge of medical and pathological terminology
- Understanding of legal processes relating to deaths and death registration
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who can approach difficult situations with empathy, professionalism and integrity.
Important Information About the Role
Due to the nature of this role, you will regularly be exposed to deceased individuals, post-mortem environments and grieving families.
This role requires someone who can manage emotionally challenging situations professionally and sensitively while maintaining attention to detail and investigative standards.
The role is hybrid, combining home and office working. However, during the first six months, you will be office‑based to support induction and training.
Please note the office is located on the first floor of a building without lift access. Reasonable adjustments and alternative arrangements will be considered for disabled applicants where possible.

- Salary: £33,603 – £35,772
- Optional on-call duties available
