These roles, as Specialty Doctors, will initially support our Acute Medical Services.

Main duties of the job

Your primary role, as our Specialty Doctor, is to provide early patient decisions with support from junior medical staff, a dedicated nursing team, procedural support practitioners and a rapid response social and therapy team.

You will work within the Acute Medical Service (AMS), supporting a team of Consultants in Acute Medicine and supporting the delivery of patient care within the Acute Medical Services in line with national standards and Care Quality Commission requirements.

The crucial parts of your role will be to provide strong clinical leadership, to promote a friendly and team‑based working environment, ensure regular pro‑active reviews and coordination of care for our patients and become part of a seamless team responsible for providing care to medical patients admitted via Emergency Medicine, the Medical Assessment Unit and SDEC.

As one of our valued Specialty Doctors, you will engage with and contribute to Safety and National Clinical Data Collection systems as required, helping and supporting the promotion of a friendly, team‑based working environment in line with Trust Values and undertake managerial and budgetary responsibilities as required with mandatory involvement in appraisals on an annual basis.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Completed 4 years full‑time postgraduate training (or equivalent if part‑time) at least 2 of which shall be in a specialty training programme in the specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • ATLS, ALS, PALS or APLS

Experience

  • Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi‑professional team.

Teaching Experience

  • Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, resident doctors and other staff.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills

Personality

  • Good leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses & other agencies.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team

Teaching

  • Proven ability to deliver high quality teaching
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff

Research/Audit

  • Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research

Communication Skills

  • Evidence of management experience or training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, other specialties and support staff.
